In response to a fan question, The Suicide Squad director shared how Rick Flag's fight scene reflecting in Peacemaker's helmet was filmed.
Director James Gunn has shared how Rick Flag’s fight scene reflected in Peacemaker’s helmet was filmed for The Suicide Squad. Gunn’s highly anticipated soft sequel/reboot of Suicide Squad, which introduces a Task Force X featuring (mostly) new characters that embark on a dangerous mission to Corto Maltese to destroy the mysterious Project Starfish, released earlier this month. Although the film has underperformed at the box office, Gunn’s film is receiving high praise for its wonderful blend of humor and in-your-face action, as well as its stunning visuals. Many have called it a new era in the DCEU, with Warner Bros. providing Gunn the freedom to create his story and the Suicide Squad film many have longed for.
One of the more memorable and ultimately emotional scenes in the new DCEU project comes when Suicide Squad original Rick Flag battles Peacemaker during the film’s climax. It’s an intense and bloody battle that comes at a pivotal moment in the film’s narrative. However, one of the most talked-about aspects of this fight scene is Gunn’s use of the Peacemaker helmet to show a reflection of Flag and Peacemaker’s fight. The Suicide Squad director has been very active in sharing behind-the-scenes details recently. From discussing King Shark’s CGI to showing an image of Margot Robbie performing Harley Quinn’s impressive escape scene. Now, the director has shed some light on how Flag and Cena’s eye-catching moment came to be.
On Twitter, @itsRyanUnicomb, who, along with posting an image of the Peacemaker helmet shot, asked Gunn if the “shot of Kinnaman reflected in Cena’s helmet” was practical or VFX composite. Gunn, who previously described the Peacemaker helmet as “a damn mirror ball,” replied by explaining the process of filming “the fighting shot” and “the helmet turning around,” as well as their use of VFX. The shot is incredibly impressive, not just because it’s unique but also due to the fact it’s not a stationary shot. As Gunn notes, the camera and Peacemaker’s helmet move as the fight unfolds, which likely only adds to the complexity of this shot. Gunn has previously explained how difficult filming Peacemaker’s helmet is and even previously alluded to the use of plates while filming Cena’s “beacon of freedom.” Also, considering how short this shot is, it’s even more admirable that Gunn and co. stuck to their guns to ensure this could be a part of the scene. Clearly, it was worth the effort, as audiences seem to be appreciating the inclusion of such a stunning visual.
Although this particular scene may have marked the end of Rick Flag’s journey in the DCEU, fans will be getting more of Peacemaker and his helmet, as the DC villain’s HBO Max spinoff show will be releasing in January. Gunn wrote the series, as well as directing many of the episodes, and it’s believed to be the first of potentially many post-Suicide Squad DC projects for Gunn. The Suicide Squad director has already stated that the Peacemaker series will have more action than any other superhero show, and if it includes more detailed and spectacular shots using Peacemaker’s helmet, fans will surely be happy.
