According to A.C. Bradley, the head writer of Marvel's What If...?, the scripts for season 2 are nearly complete. Marvel Studios announced the production of What If...? in April 2019, the studio's first animated series. The show is Marvel's fourth TV series with Disney+, and has premiered on the heels of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. What If...? boasts an impressive cast of past Marvel actors returning to voice their characters, including Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (a.k.a. the Hulk), Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and plenty others.
After the season finale of Loki left fans eager to see more from MCU Phase 4, episode 1 of What If...? was finally released on August 11. The story follows an alternative timeline where Agent Peggy Carter becomes the First Avenger instead of Steve Rogers after an explosion leaves him seriously injured. Racing against time, Peggy chooses to be injected with the Super Soldier Serum, encouraged by Howard Stark. Now Captain Carter, Peggy fights alongside Steve, who pilots a mechanical suit called the Hydra Stomper. Audiences see a similar series of events unfold, like the rescue of the 107th Infantry Regime. However, some things are different: Bucky survives and narrowly avoids becoming the Winter Soldier, and Captain Carter sacrifices herself by stepping into a Tesseract-fueled portal, only to be re-discovered by Nick Fury and Clint Barton 70 years later.
As reported by Discussing Film, the second season of What If...? was confirmed to be "almost done" by head writer A.C. Bradley. Season 2 was first announced in December 2019, and similarly to season 1, will likely feature a nine or 10-episode season. Marvel producers have also confirmed that every episode of What If...? is canon, meaning season 2 could have some seriously important consequences on the rest of the MCU. Bradley's full quote can be read below:
"Work on season two has been different because of COVID, and I think all our lives are very different right now. But we’ve had an amazing team and writing is knee-deep. Almost done actually. Because these episodes are so difficult to animate, the writing has to happen quite a bit before the show airs. As hard as the last year and a half has been for production, it’s been harder on people – it’s been hard on everyone, I can’t complain."
With the release of What If...?, three live-action shows, and the long-awaited premiere of Black Widow, MCU Phase 4 has certainly kicked off with a bang. Fans have a lot to look forward to from Marvel Studios, including the return of Tom Holland's fan-favorite hero in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the highly-anticipated Eternals, and a look into the shattered timeline in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The addition of The Watcher (voiced by Jeffery Wright) in What If...?, an omniscient narrator throughout the series, could be an important character in upcoming MCU projects. Seemingly unbound by time, The Watcher may have a crucial role in the recently-confirmed Multiverse, which could potentially be the premise for What If...? season 2.
Outside of Bradley's statements, little else remains known about the show's second season. Still, it's certainly impressive that the crew was able to knock out not one, but two seasons of the show amidst a pandemic. For now, viewers can expect to see some exciting stories unfold throughout season 1, including a zombie episode, a timeline where T'Challa (a.k.a. Black Panther) becomes Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill, and a storyline that follows a heroic version of Erik Killmonger. New episodes of What If...? release Wednesdays on Disney+.
