All the characters that make up the Wynonna Earp family get hopeful endings to their stories as the SyFy supernatural western ends after four seasons.
For four seasons Wynonna Earp fans have supported the unique cast of characters who put their lives and love on the line fighting demons, so giving them anything but a satisfying ending was not only necessary but also required. Throughout the show's tumultuous history fans have rooted for and feared for Billy, Rachel, Nedley, Jeremy, Nicole, Waverly, Doc, and Wynonna in their bizarre adventures.
Each episode of a season shortened by COVID and production issues brought new and, at times, jaw-dropping moments. The final season, which centered on the revelation of Waverly Earp actually being the daughter of an angel and newly appointed Guardian of the Garden, brought the fan-favorite SyFy supernatural western its strongest story arc. However, Wynonna Earp took great care to bring a final gift to those who had remained loyal to the show with great performances and a riveting story.
While each character faced seemingly insurmountable odds, they not only survived, but they also prevailed thanks to the common thread that drove them all, which was love. Although each was given a satisfying conclusion to their story as explained below, there are still more great stories to tell if Wynonna Earp’s adventures continue.
Billy Clanton's one and only season on Wynonna Earp was most assuredly a full one. He became the last member of the Clanton clan, long in conflict with the Earps, to remain in Purgatory. The teenager bonded with Rachel Valdez, Sheriff Nicole Haught's new ward. Because Rachel was living on the Earp homestead his mother tried to discourage the relationship and, when he didn't desist, she turned him into one of the deadly Reaper creatures that were invisible to everyone except their intended targets. Following his mother's death and some time spent chained up in the basement of Shorty's Bar, Billy was released by a sympathetic Rachel. Ultimately Billy’s sister Cleo turned him human again before she left town. Billy attended Nicole and Waverly’s wedding in Purgatory with Rachel, later agreeing to join her and Nedley on a fishing/camping trip.
Rachel Valdez was another of the handful of characters who joined the cast of Wynonna Earp in its fourth and final season. Nicole and Wynonna discovered the teen at an abandoned Black Badge facility as they searched for another way into the Garden to rescue Waverly. When Wynonna disappeared into the Garden, Nicole took Rachel in, as the teenager’s mother had died alongside other Black Badge scientists in an earlier accident at the facility. Rachel quickly became a member of the Earp extended family and lived with Nicole at the homestead waiting for Waverly and Wynonna's return. While Nicole acted as her guardian, it was the hard-living Wynonna that Rachel idolized and wanted to be like. Rachel also became friends with the grandfatherly Randy Nedley after his return to Purgatory. When the threat from the Garden was finally vanquished, Rachel gifted the newly married Nicole and Waverly with an original song.
As the sheriff of Purgatory when Wynonna Earp began, Randy Nedley was used to seeing unusual things in the Ghost River Triangle. When he was a young deputy, he rescued the lone surviving child of a cult massacre and took her under his wing. That child would leave Purgatory only to return and become his new deputy, Nicole Haught. He did not reveal his role in her rescue until later in the series as he began training her to replace him as sheriff.
In the show's final season, Nedley had retired and named Nicole as his replacement, but he stays in Purgatory to operate Shorty’s Bar, staying close to his friends in case they needed him in their adventures. He disappeared briefly after trying to help Wynonna rescue her sister and Doc from the Garden. Nedley’s daughter blamed Wynonna for his “death,” and planned to have the Earp heir killed. However, Wynonna and her friends discovered Nedley had become a furry ogre rather than dying. He was later restored to human form. Nedley took a stand beside his demon-fighting friends in a final battle for Purgatory and afterward, proudly walked his surrogate daughter, Nicole, down the aisle as she married her true love. With the demons temporarily vanquished he had no problem taking another young orphan, Rachel, under his wing and prepared to introduce her and Billy to the fine art of fishing.
Initially arriving in Purgatory as a support agent and lab technician for Black Badge Agent Xavier Dolls, Jeremy remained to help Wynonna and her friends battle demons in Purgatory. Jeremy opened up about his mysterious past and fell in love with a young naturalist, Robin, who was later lost to him when the latter unintentionally sacrificed himself to the mysterious fog that threatened Purgatory in season 4 of Wynonna Earp.
Jeremy eventually moved up the ranks at Black Badge while also remaining loyal to Wynonna and her team his entire time in the Ghost River Triangle. In the end, he stood up to the corruption at Black Badge and was rewarded by being named the head of a new Purgatory Division of the organization. Although heartbroken by losing Robin, he still believed in the power of love and officiated Waverly and Nicole's wedding. His journey on the show came to a hopeful conclusion when he indicated he's ready to take a risk on a relationship again by flirting with the young caterer that handled the wedding.
There were several things Nicole Haught probably thought she'd never find when she came to Purgatory and joined the Purgatory Sheriff's department. Yet, the earnest young deputy, quickly found herself the moral compass for a bizarre team of demon fighters and wound up with a family that included a hard-drinking, demon-killing best friend, a surrogate father, and the love of her life.
At the core of Nicole's life in Purgatory is her love story with half-angel Waverly Earp. Time and again, Nicole proved her love and devotion by enduring every manner of trials, including poisoning, a stabbing, temporary death, and even a curse where she regurgitated frogs. Although she lost her position as Sheriff, Nicole ultimately reclaimed her badge. In the ultimate act of love, Nicole sacrificed her freedom by persuading Dark Angel Waverly to relinquish to Nicole part of Waverly’s burden. Nicole pledged eternal devotion to Waverly and became the Angel’s Shield, committed to living alongside Waverly forever to protect Purgatory and the Ghost River Triangle. Nicole and Waverly happily married and started their lives together on the Earp homestead.
The younger half-sister of the Earp heir, Wynonna, Waverly began the show living at the family homestead in Purgatory, working at Shorty's. Engaged to a rich young entrepreneur when her sister returned home, Waverly was happy with her life, until a certain ginger-haired deputy by the name of Nicole Haught came into the bar. Waverly was instantly smitten. A living sunbeam, Waverly was the Earp everyone wanted to protect, but soon they'd learned there was much more to her than met the eye.
Waverly was not only half-Earp, but she was also half-angel as her father turned out to be the Angel Guardian of the Garden. The story of her parentage and how she grew into a fierce, confident heavenly warrior was perhaps one of Wynonna Earp's best story and character arcs. She grew from a sweet and demure young woman to an avenging angel fighting with all her power to protect those she loved most. Through Nicole Haught’s love, Waverly eventually found a way to share the burden that came with being the new Guardian of the Garden when Nicole sacrificed the right to ever leave the Triangle by pledging to become the Angel's Shield. Waverly and Nicole sealed their love by being married on the Earp homestead, content to remain there and continue their lives together.
John Henry "Doc" Holliday's connection to the Earp family goes back over a century. The one-time best friend to the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, was turned immortal and betrayed by the Iron Witch Clootie and trapped in a well near Purgatory for over 100 years. He finally escaped his prison when the Earp heir, Wynonna returns to town. Doc adjusted to the new century by becoming close to Wynonna and her sister, pledging to fight by their side and protect them. He fell in love with Wynonna, and they had a child together, baby Alice. Wynonna and Doc had to send their child away to a secret location to protect her from the dangerous demon, Bulshar.
By the show's final season, Wynonna and Doc's romance had been a nonstop roller coaster ride of emotions, leaving the two at odds. Doc was turned into a vampire by a former lover and had to fight the vampiric desires that followed in turn. Throughout his time in Purgatory, Doc never pretended to be anything other than himself, a gunslinger and gambler driven by his own version of a strict code to which he adhered. Anyone Doc considered a friend he was fiercely loyal and protective of. He didn't hesitate to follow Waverly into the Garden to protect her until they could find a way to escape. In the final battle to free Purgatory from the threats from the Garden, Doc is returned to his mortal state. Thinking there is no future for him and Wynonna, he chose to leave Purgatory to explore the world, although he didn’t make it far.
Hard-living and hard-drinking free spirit Wynonna Earp returned to Purgatory after learning she was the Earp heir, destined to spend her days killing demons with her ancestor's magic gun Peacemaker. Physical demons were not the only ones she had to fight on her return home. Reconnecting with her half-sister Waverly, she had to learn to trust people again. Wynonna cycled through many spirals, skirmishes, and feuds with other Purgatory residents. She even gave up her newborn daughter to protect her.
Those who loved her always had more faith in Wynonna than she ever had in herself. Wynonna had a hard time accepting that her half-angel sister and Guardian of the Garden would name her the Garden's champion. She believed she was not worthy of the love and trust others have given her, even letting the man she loved leave town without her. After a tough-love wake-up heart-to-heart from Waverly and Nicole, Wynonna finally accepted that she was worthy of having a devoted sister in Waverly, a best friend in Nicole, and true love in Doc Holliday. Wynonna stopped Doc from leaving Purgatory by shooting out his tires. After they affirmed their love for each other, Wynonna Earp left town with Doc to start a new adventure and reunite with their daughter.
