JOHN TERRY has replaced Wayne Rooney as the bookies’ favourite to be appointed Derby County’s next permanent manager.
That’s according to Betfair, who’ve slashed Terry’s odds on succeeding Phillip Cocu from 5/2 to 4/5 in the last 48 hours.
John Terry is the outright favourite for the Derby job[/caption]Rooney, a player-coach at the Club, had previously been odds-on at 4/6 to take the top job at Pride Park.
But it appears that interest in Wazza has cooled with his price plummeting to 7/2.
England’s all-time leading goalscorer now sits behind the biggest market-mover in Allardyce.
Big Sam hasn’t managed since being given his marching orders by Everton in May 2018 but that hasn’t stopped him from rocketing into second favourite.
The 66-year-old was previously an 18/1 chance but now follows Terry closely at 10/3.
Derby relieved Cocu of his duties earlier this month with the side anchored to the bottom of the Championship table.
Rooney, goalkeeping coach Shay Given, Liam Rosenior and Justin Walker are in charge of first-team affairs until a replacement is found.
But the quartet weren’t able to change their fortunes on Saturday when succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
The result leaves them in last position with six points from their opening 12 games and four away from safety.
However, former Rams striker Darren Bent doesn’t think it’s likely that Terry will be the one chosen to lift them out of their troubles.
He told Football Insider: “I can see him being a manager, but not yet. Derby are rock bottom of the Championship and they’ve got Cocu who is an experienced manager.
“We’re talking about a guy in John Terry who this will be his first managerial job and his task is to get them off the bottom of the table.
“I don’t quite understand it, I don’t get it, for me, it’s a bit of a weird one.
“I’m all for people getting opportunities and I think John Terry will get his opportunity but I don’t think this is the right one for him at the moment.”
