New baby, new comic riffs
Tom Segura mines his life for his comedy. If he has an interesting conversation on an airplane or becomes obsessed with a television show, they are likely fodder for the stand-up routine of the 40-year-old comic, who complements his live shows on the road with that current trifecta of comedy: Netflix specials, podcasts and character parts in movies.
Segura and his wife — fellow comedian Christina Pazsitzky, with whom he created and co-hosts the podcast "Your Mom's House" — became parents for the first time three and a half years ago, after almost eight years of marriage. Their second son celebrated his first birthday a few weeks ago.
Naturally, Segura's comedy, on view on Thursday at the Palace Theatre in Albany, now reflects the dramatic impact a baby and a toddler have had on his life.
"It's not like I'm suddenly doing an hour of kid material," says Segura, "but there are definitely some stories and examples of what's been going on in my house."
Such as the older boy flushing toy cars down the toilet.
"My kid just cost me thousands of dollars," says Segura.
Thought he was annoyed, he was also secretly amused.
"Even as I was telling him he really shouldn't have done that, I'm trying not to smile," says Segura.
He became annoyed again when the plumber summoned to fix the problem lectured father, not son.
"He tells me, 'You know, you really shouldn't do that.' And I'm like, 'I know. I'm 40 years old. I know that's where you go to the bathroom, not flush toys. Tell my kid. He won't listen to me.'"
As if on cue, Segura's son starts to squawk in the background, interrupting a phone interview from the family's home in Los Angeles.
"Hang on," Segura says, "my kid is freaking out."
