The Latest: Trump tweets on liberal lawmakers draw rebuke

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump's tweets on Democratic congresswomen (all times local):

President Donald Trump is assailing a group of Democratic congresswomen of color as foreign-born troublemakers who should go back to the "broken and crime infested places from which they came. But he's ignoring the fact that the women are American citizens and all but one was born in the U.S.

Trump's tweets prompted a wave of condemnation from Democrats, who set aside their rifts to speak as one in calling Trump's remarks racist.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the president wants to "make America white again." Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, jousting for days with Pelosi, said Trump "can't conceive of an America that includes us."

Trump was almost certainly referring to Ocasio-Cortez and her allies. The others are Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

President Donald Trump is wading provocatively into a rift between a group of liberal Democratic congresswomen and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In tweets Sunday, Trump portrays the lawmakers as foreign-born troublemakers who, he says, should go back to their home countries. He tweets: "You can't leave fast enough." In fact, the lawmakers in question are Americans and all but one were born in the U.S.

Trump assails what he calls "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe." He does not identify the women.

But he's unmistakably referring to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and her allies in what's become known as the squad. The others are Reps. Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib. Only Omar was foreign-born.
