RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A ranking by a television station shows a coastal county in North Carolina has the highest average teacher salary in the state.
WRAL-TV reports Dare County has an average teacher salary of $59,223 this year, putting it on top. The other school systems in the top five are: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City, Orange County, Wake County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
WRAL used data from the North Carolina School Finances website to rank the salaries.
Even though Dare County doesn't have the highest teacher supplement, local officials say it's at the top because its 11 schools have a high percentage of teachers with national board certifications, master's degrees and longevity.
Officials say it also offers desirable perks, such as two housing units where newly hired teachers can live temporarily for $850 a month.
