The Knicks' 106-94 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday afternoon signaled something that has been creeping up for more than a week now: the end of Linsanity. Jeremy Lin struggled to score 14 points on 5 for 18 from the field as the Knicks continued their March winless streak and lost their fifth consecutive game. That's not to say that Lin was completely ineffective -- he's averaged 16.4 points per game during the five-game losing streak -- but he hasn't had the kind of impact that took the world by storm.
One of the reasons investors buy technology stocks is that they expect a better return on investment for what could be risky propositions. After all, who can predict that a new chip or smartphone or videogame will be a hit? For every iPad 2, after all, there is a TouchPad. Technology companies often require plenty of cash to invest in new ideas and build them; then they can charge plenty for an innovation. When those companies are well-managed, they are profitable and build up extra cash.
Every year, the selection committee is criticized for snubbing teams that should have made the NCAA Tournament. There will always be disagreements about who should have made the Field of 68. The 69th and 70th teams will always feel like they got snubbed. There's no way to change that. The biggest problem is how the selection committee chooses the 37 at-large teams. Of the 68 teams that made the NCAA Tournament, 37 received at-large bids. These teams didn't win their conference tournament, and were rewarded by the committee for having good regular seasons. Choosing the field isn't easy. Every year, there are a few teams that deserve to make the tourney, but can't because there isn't enough room. When a team is on the bubble, it's hard to argue that they were snubbed. Nevertheless, there were a few teams this year that made the field that probably didn't deserve it.
