Locally filmed series 'Welcome Home' high on snark

Lest there be any doubt, the three central characters of in the regionally shot comedy series "Welcome Home" are not saints. They are not paragons of good. Their motives are selfish and sex-obsessed, and their view of the world is ... skewed.

There's one word that describes them perfectly.

"You guys are a--holes," says Ron to his friends.

"No, Ron," corrects Justin. "We're a--holes in our 30s living at our parents' houses. Why don't you let that sink in a bit, OK?"

This conversation occurs near the end of the show's first season, which streams as an independent series on Amazon Prime – seven episodes, most of them around 20 minutes, all of them filled with breezy snark. Justin's pithy characterization of himself and his friends is more or less the premise for the entire show.

"Exactly! Nailed it there," confirms Bobby Chase, co-creator, co-writer, co-producer, co-director and cast member of "Welcome Home," which is due to drop its second batch of episodes on Prime within the coming week or so. In the meantime, Proctors will screen the season premiere on Saturday evening.

The trio at the heart of the show are obnoxious to the point of quasi-sociopathy but charmingly so. Chase plays Bobby, brother of Ron (Daniel B. Martin), who's obnoxious and stupid. Ron is friends with Justin (Justin Alvis), who's obnoxious and smart. Completing the troika of obnoxiousness is Jen (Mindy Miner), who bounces back home after being dumped at the altar – just as Justin bounces back home after losing his job in New York City.

There he encounters Jared, his mother's perpetually shirtless boyfriend, played by Capital Region standup comic Greg Aidala — also a producer on the show. Ron, meanwhile, is crashing in the garage of his late parents' house, where Bobby now lives with his...
