WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University softball team put together a doubleheader split on Monday afternoon against non-conference opponent Hiwassee.
The Eagles are back in action at home tomorrow against St. Mary of the Woods.
Game one
A slow start put the Eagles behind 3-0 early after passed balls and walks allowed a few runs.
Asbury got a run back in the bottom of the first on Emily Rogers' double which scored Deana Phillips to make it a 3-1 ball game.
Hiwassee would score twice more off of an error in the fourth to push their lead out to 5-1. Asbury trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
A late rally from the Eagles began as they loaded up the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Asbury notched three runs in the inning as Paige Hill, Emily Rogers, and Bree Sanders all collected RBI singles to make it a 6-4 game.
The rally fell just short though, as AU was unable to close the gap further.
Paige Hill pitched a complete game and struck out seven in the loss.
Rogers posted a team-high two RBI, while Caitlyn Taylor tallied two hits, including a double.
Asbury notched four doubles as Hill, Taylor, Sanders, and Rogers totaled one apiece. The Eagles totaled seven hits as a team.
Game two
Hiwassee scored a run in the top half of the first to start the contest off with the lead.
Asbury tied things up in the bottom of the first as Caitlyn Taylor drilled an RBI double to deep-right center to take a 1-0 advantage.
The inning continued as Kamry Wells collected an RBI single to score Taylor. Phillips would score later on in the inning off of a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 AU.
Asbury added four more runs in the fifth off four hits to extend their lead out to 7-1. AU finished things off with a walk-off walk in the sixth to run-rule the Tigers 9-1.
Ally Moore pitched a complete game in the circle and struck out three as she recorded the win.
AU posted 14 hits throughout the game and held Hiwassee to only one hit.
Deana Phillips finished 3-4 from the plate with three runs scored. Kamry Wells also registered three hits and added two RBI.
Shauna McKain led the Eagles with a team-high four RBI.
Caitlyn Taylor and Bree Sanders recorded two hits each. Additionally, Sanders finished with two RBI.
