The Russian Foreign Ministry is satisfied with the verdict in Turkey in the case of the murder of Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov in Ankara. This is stated on the website of the diplomatic department.
“We closely followed the course of the trial It is gratifying that the Turkish law enforcement and judicial systems have finally ruled on this tragic incident,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry pointed out that “certain circles” are also guilty of the incident, which before the murder “artificially whipped up a negative atmosphere in the media and social networks around Russia’s actions in Syria.”
Karlova was shot dead on December 19, 2016 during the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Art in Ankara. The killer was shot at the scene; he turned out to be a former Turkish policeman, Mevlut Altintash. The Russian authorities qualified the incident as a terrorist attack.
There were 28 accused in the case. Nine were sentenced to imprisonment from five to 15 years, five were given life imprisonment, and five were acquitted. Nine people are wanted.
Among the convicts are former employees of the Office for Information Technology and Communications of Turkey Husein Ketyuce and Shahin Sogut, who, according to the investigation, was the curator of the diplomat’s killer, as well as former officers of the Turkish police Ahmet Kilicharslan and the ex-head of the department for work with Russia of the National Intelligence Organization ( MIТ) of the Republic of Vehbi Kurshad Akalyn.
