UN Human Rights Office announces 18 deaths at protests in Myanmar

The UN Human Rights Office said it received “credible information” that the crackdown on anti-coup protesters in Myanmar killed at least 18 people and injured more than 30. Protesters in the country are demanding that the military return power to civilian leaders. Myanmar’s government was overthrown in a coup d’état on 1 February.

“The deaths reportedly resulted from live ammunition shooting at crowds in Yangon, Tavoi, Mandalay, Myye, Bago and Pakhouku,” the city of Myanmar, where the protests took place, is listed in a UN statement (quoted by AP).

“Tear gas was also reported to have been used in various places, as well as stun grenades,” the document says. The UN Office condemned the escalation of violence against protesters in Myanmar and called on the military to immediately stop using force against peaceful demonstrators.
