The official representative of the UN Secretary General Stefan Dujarrick commented on the blocking of the accounts of US President Donald Trump on social networks. He noted that all measures to combat hate speech must comply with international human rights standards. At the same time, Mr. Dujarrik said that private corporations are not parties to the relevant international treaties.
“There is a basic principle that all measures to contain hate speech must strictly comply with international human rights standards,” said Stefan Dujarrick at a briefing in response to a question about the Secretary General’s attitude to the situation with the blocking of Mr. Trump’s accounts (quoted by RIA News”).
He recalled that the governments of countries are responsible within the framework of the treaties and statutes they have signed, including the UN Charter, in relation to international human rights. “Private corporations are another matter,” added Stefan Dujarrick. According to him, in matters of business and human rights, there is a basic UN principle, according to which “companies are responsible for preventing and eliminating human rights violations if they occur.”
As political tensions rise in the United States following the storming of Congress on January 6, Mr Trump’s accounts have been blocked by Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitch. According to the leadership of these social networks, the publications of the current US president violated the rules of the platforms, which prohibit calls to violent action and the praise of violence.
