Members of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina Zeljko Komšić and Shefik Jaferovic, representing the Croatian and Muslim communities, refused to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Mr. Lavrov is in the country on a working visit. The refusal of the members of the presidium is connected with yesterday’s statement by the Russian minister on the Dayton Accords.
Lavrov’s meeting with three members of the Presidium – Zeljko Komšić, Shefik Jaferovic and Milorad Dodik (representing the Bosnian Serb community) – was scheduled for Tuesday morning, December 15.
Sergei Lavrov said yesterday that Russia is witnessing attempts to destroy the architecture of the Dayton Accords, according to which modern Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded. “Such attempts, whatever the motives, are fraught with the most serious consequences,” he said then.
According to Mr Koshmic, Mr Lavrov’s support for the resolution on the military neutrality of one of the parts of the country – the Republika Srpska – contradicts the fact that such decisions can only be made by the central authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. “It is clear to everyone that Mr. Lavrov is among the top three world diplomats. For a person with such experience, all actions are planned in advance. What we could see from the moment he arrived in BiH are signals from the country he represents … We want friendly relations with Russia, but we also want them to respect the institutions of BiH, ”Federalna TV channel quotes. ba words of mister Komšić (quoted by RIA Novosti).
The Russian Foreign Ministry posted on Twitter a photo of Mr Lavrov’s meeting with representatives of Bosnia’s highest executive body. Of the three members of the presidium, only Mr. Dodik is present in the photo, Interfax notes.
The Dayton Peace Agreement was signed in 1995 by representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. It ended the civil war that had lasted since 1992 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia, along with the United States, Germany, Great Britain and France, was the guarantor of the negotiation process. Since 1997, after the document fully entered into force, the document regulates the structure of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
