Azerbaijan calls French Senate resolution on Karabakh a “piece of paper”
Azerbaijan regards the resolution of the French Senate on recognizing the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh as an ordinary piece of paper. This was stated by the assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev, RIA Novosti reports.
“This piece of paper, adopted in the name of narrow political ambitions, along with a gross violation of international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, raises serious questions in connection with the intentions and objective activities of France and as a co-chairing country of the OSCE Minsk Group, and how a permanent member of the UN Security Council, ”Hajiyev said.
Earlier on November 25, the French Senate called on the country’s government to recognize the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). 305 French senators out of 306 participants in the meeting voted for the adoption of the resolution. The Senate also called for the immediate withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces and their supporters from the territories “captured as a result of military operations” conducted since September 27. In addition, the resolution calls for the restoration of the borders defined in 1994 and the security of the Armenian population. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called the resolution a “historic decision”.
On November 9, Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan adopted a joint statement suggesting the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh from November 10. According to the document, the parties to the conflict stop at their positions. Azerbaijan will gain control over the territories of Aghdam, Gazakh, Kelbajar and Lachin regions. Russian peacekeepers will arrive in the region. The units will be deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor, which connects Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.
