Putin extended counter-sanctions
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree extending counter-sanctions against the West until the end of 2021. The document was published on the official portal of legal information on Saturday, November 21.
The government has been instructed to ensure the implementation of measures to implement this decree and, if necessary, make proposals to change the period of validity of economic restrictions.
The decision was made in order to protect the national interests of Russia, the decree says.
Counter-sanctions were first introduced by Russia in August 2014 in response to restrictive measures by Western countries after the annexation of Crimea to Russia and the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, many types of food products from the European Union, USA, Australia, Canada and other countries are prohibited from being imported into the Russian Federation.
A report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the Russian economy, published in August 2019, found that the Russian economy lost 0.2 percentage points on average annually due to sanctions from 2014 to 2018.
