Former 4X World Title Challenger Ruben Castillo Passes

By Boxing Bob Newman

Sad to report that former 4X world title challenger Ruben Castillo has passed. In late January 2026, reports indicated Castillo was facing significant health challenges. He had reportedly requested prayers for an upcoming medical procedure and urged others to prioritize regular checkups. He had previously battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his extended family.

Born in Lubbock, Texas, and raised in Bakersfield, California, Castillo was a premier featherweight and junior lightweight contender during the 1970s and 80s. He was widely respected for his “heart and grit,” sharing the ring with some of the greatest legends in boxing history. He did win the USBA featherweight title in 1979, defending it once. His four valiant, but unsuccessful attempts at world honors were as follows:

Jan 20, 1980- TKO11 by Alexis Arguello for the WBC super featherweight title. Castillo was getting his first title shot with a gaudy 43-0, 21 KOs record. Castillo was leading on one card at the time of the stoppage.
Apr 12, 1980- L15 to Salvador Sanchez for the WBC featherweight title. Castillo moved down in weight and got his second title shot, against another Hall-of-Famer less than three months after the Arguello loss.
Feb 20, 1983- L12 to Juan LaPorte for the WBC featherweight title. This was a bit more one-sided than the Sanchez loss.
Apr 19, 1985- TKO6 by Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC super featherweight title. Castillo was a pro for ten years with 66 fights under his belt, a pace that none of today’s pros even try to manage.

He retired with a professional record of 67-10-2, 37 KOs. Following his retirement in 1997, he remained active in the sport as a boxing analyst, having a wonderful run as an expert analyst with Prime Ticket, a regional California cable outlet, which broadcast fights from the Inglewood Forum. Castillo was knowledgeable yet gregarious, adding his bilingual skills to many a post fight interview with Mexican and other Spanish speaking fighters.

This writer will remember Ruben as a fun loving former fighter, always ready with a joke, providing laughs to anyone who was listening. Ruben Castillo was 68 years old. R.I.P. “El Conquistador”
