Spain finds itself in an unexpected and uncomfortable position as the reigning champion of the continent.
It’s looking to pass UEFA Nations League rival Denmark when the teams face-off on Saturday.
The Danes have compiled two wins thus far in Group A4 of the competition and are already two points ahead of La Roja, which opened its campaign with a 0-0 draw in Serbia.
Victory for Denmark would make things even more difficult for Spain. However, it would put Denmark in the driver’s seat to win the group.
That’s easier said than done with the country trying to get its first win on Spanish soil since 1979.

The last four meetings between the teams have each gone in favor of Spain and it’s been 16 years since the nations last met in any setting. The players on both teams don’t have any sort of grudge against each other because of how long ago the last game was played. That’s important so both sides have as level a head as possible.
Xabi Alonso recorded two goals in that game, while Barcelona icon Xavi also converted in that most recent 2008 matchup for a 3-0 win for Spain. That’s a year that the country also won the Euros. That could be a good omen heading into this weekend’s encounter, which will see Luis de la Fuente’s side attempting to extend its 12-match undefeated streak. Since exiting Euro 2024’s last 16 at the hands of host Germany, Denmark has embarked on a win streak to open its Nations League play in confident fashion.
It’s first away trip of the tournament doesn’t get much harder than flying to Spain, who will be eager to restore a sense of normalcy and move to the top of Group A4 for the first time.
