Another surefire action fight is on the way in the light heavyweight division.
David Benavidez has announced to the world through his Instagram page that he’s finalized a contract to fight David Morrell, but says the date and location is still to be announced.
ESPN’s sources indicate the date is likely to take place on Jan. 25 in Las Vegas while headlining on a Premier Boxing Champions PPV, which means we’d be right around the corner from another tremendous matchup in the light heavyweight division.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) moved up to 175 after failing to land a big fight against Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight. And while David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) has a far lesser profile to the general public than Canelo, he might actually be the much more dangerous fight at this point in time.
It’s said that Benavidez had also been considering a fight against Jesse Hart on the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach card in December, but instead decided to lean into the fight he believes will be much more compelling to fans — and he’d be correct in that assessment.
So not only does a Benavidez vs Morrell fight mean a great action event for the fans, it’s also a meaningful fight in that the winner will be set up to take on the winner of this weekend’s undisputed fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Light heavyweight is getting hot, and as good as it has been in a long time.
