Dame Maggie Smith was truly the best, no matter what acting role she was in.
Whether she was the vitriolic Dowager Countess of Gratham Violet Crawley on Downton Abbey or heroic Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series (when you read the books, you truly saw her in them, didn’t you?), she owned every role and stole scenes whenever she was on camera or on the stage.
Smith died at the age of 89 after just an incredible career, so as we pay tribute to all of her legendary roles, let’s look back at some photos of her over the decades:
