Ever since Grimace threw out his first pitch back in June, the Mets have played themselves back into the National League playoff race. But not even a McDonald’s mascot can prevent the Mets from the occasional on-field embarrassment.
That was very much the case on Tuesday night.
During the second inning of the Mets’ game against the Rockies, Kris Bryant’s single to right field was cut off by Harrison Bader who spun around and airmailed a throw into the infield. Now, pitcher Luis Severino was definitely at fault there for ball watching and not backing up the throw. But the defensive lapse was made even worse by what happened next.
An errant throw, a bobble, and the Rockies not fixing their netting in the opponent's dugout just cost the Mets a run pic.twitter.com/tpKzUGdGtM

Third baseman Mark Vientos chased down the errant throw near the dugout, and as he slid to prevent the ball from going down the steps, he lost control of it. The baseball hit the dugout netting, which clearly wasn’t sealed at the bottom. So the ball fell down the netting and into the dugout as opposed to staying in play.
And just like that, the Rockies got a run out of it. Colorado went on to win, 6-3, and fans were in disbelief over that awful defensive moment.
Does Sevy just hate backing up throws or covering first when he needs to? https://t.co/lSsrT7tFPS

Does Severino know how to back up any play? https://t.co/fxRJfGlCv7

The Mets struggling to execute the fundamentals of a relay cost the Mets a run. The net was icing on the embarrassment cake. https://t.co/BYZ2L1u0HA
