Marcedes Lewis has been around for a long time. He’s gone against and played with some excellent quarterbacks in his nearly two-decade career. That gave him a unique perspective on what to look for in the position. When the Chicago Bears re-signed the 40-year-old to bring more depth and experience to their offense, it meant he’d get a chance to assess what they have in Caleb Williams. He is no stranger to high draft picks. He was in Jacksonville when they selected Blake Bortles 3rd overall in 2014.
Is he getting the same vibes from Williams?
Not even close. Lewis appeared on the All Facts No Brakes podcast with Keyshawn Johnson, where he was asked about his new quarterback. The tight end was effusive in his praise. He sees a lot of special qualities that only appeared in one other quarterback Lewis has seen up close in his long career. Yes, it is precisely the one you’re thinking about—the perfectionism, the accuracy, and the competitiveness. They all come across so much like Aaron Rodgers.
He wouldn’t mention that name unless he trusted what his eyes told him. After all, he’s not the first person to bring up Rodgers’ name when discussing Williams. Quite a few prominent draft evaluators mentioned the similarities between the two. Both were deadly accurate from the pocket and on the move. They could improvise as well as anybody and seemed to garner tons of love from teammates. Say what you will about Rodgers’ questionable personality these days. He remains liked and respected inside the locker room.
Few know this better than Marcedes Lewis. The two were teammates for five years, and they reached two NFC championship games during that span. If he is right, and the Bears may have landed a young version of Rodgers with Williams, things are about to change in Chicago. Lewis is no doubt thrilled for a chance to see it unfold. He’s hoping to play two more years in the NFL, reaching an even 20 seasons in his career. His experience and leadership could be a major benefit for Williams’ development.
