EXCLUSIVE: Tremaine Edmunds Talks Caleb Williams, His Coaches, And Bears Bright Future

Sports Mockery recently had the opportunity to interview Chicago Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who opened up about his journey in the NFL, his transition to the Bears, and his aspirations for the future. Edmunds, a key free agent acquisition for the Bears last season, has already begun making his mark on the team with his exceptional skills and leadership qualities. With help from Justin Melo of The Draft Network, we delved into the key insights from Edmunds’ interview, highlighting his impressive career statistics and exploring his potential impact on the Bears’ defense.

Early Years and NFL Journey

Edmunds was born on May 2, 1998, in Danville, Virginia. Football runs in his veins. His father, Ferrell Edmunds, was a two-time Pro Bowl tight end for the Miami Dolphins. Tremaine’s journey to the NFL began at Virginia Tech, where he played college football and established himself as one of the top linebackers in the country. His performance earned him a 1st round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.

Across the next five years, Edmunds quickly became a cornerstone of their defense. He amassed 463 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, and two Pro Bowl selections. Experts and opponents alike lauded his ability to read plays and his rare mixture of size, speed, and agility, which made him a formidable presence on the field. These attributes soon caught the attention of Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, who, along with GM Ryan Poles, signed him in the 2023 offseason to bolster their defense.

Transition to Chicago

Edmunds expressed his excitement about joining the Bears and admiration for the team’s storied past. “Playing for a franchise with such a rich history is an honor. The Bears have a tradition of great linebackers, and I want to be a part of that legacy,” Edmunds said. He also highlighted the importance of his new role in the team’s defensive scheme, emphasizing his versatility and leadership.

Edmunds’ transition to the Bears has been smooth, thanks in part to the support from his teammates and coaching staff. “The guys have been great, and the coaches have really helped me understand the system. It’s been a great experience so far, and I’m looking forward to contributing to our success,” he added.

Tremaine Edmunds, the leader

One of the standout aspects Tremaine Edmunds prides himself on is his leadership, on and off the field. Known for his work ethic and dedication, he has quickly become a vital presence in the Bears’ locker room. “Leadership is about setting the right example and being there for your teammates. I take that responsibility seriously,” Edmunds explained.

He brings a wealth of experience and production to the Bears’ defense. His career averages reflect his consistency and impact:

  • Tackles per Season: Averaging over 115 tackles per season, Edmunds is a tackling machine known for stopping the run and disrupting opposing offenses.
  • Coverage Skills: With 9 career interceptions and numerous pass deflections, Edmunds excels in pass coverage, an essential trait for modern linebackers.
  • Sack Production: His 6.5 career sacks demonstrate his ability to pressure the quarterback, adding another dimension to his game.

The Bears’ defense, already known for its toughness, is expected to reach new heights with Edmunds in the middle. Last year, they finished with the #1 defense against the run. Expectations are much higher going into 2024.

The Coaches

One thing that has him excited more than most is the coaching staff. He was thrilled upon hearing the news that Chicago had hired Eric Washington as defensive coordinator. The man had been the Buffalo Bills defensive line coach prior to joining the staff. Edmunds knows him well. “Coach E [Washington] is my guy. He has a ton of knowledge about the game. One thing that grabs my attention is that he’s a man of God. To each their own, but that speaks to me and plays a large role in my life.”

More than anything, the defense will benefit from Washington’s ability to respect players as individuals and his detailed ability as a teacher.

“He’s always ready to talk about whatever you need to discuss, even outside of football,” he explained. “It goes well beyond football with him. Obviously what he does on the field speaks for itself as well. He’s a great teacher. He brings a lot to the table and he definitely has the respect of our defense.”

This also goes for head coach Matt Eberflus, whom Edmunds feels was critical in turning the defense around after their difficult start to last season thanks to his motivation and play-calling prowess.

“Coach Eberflus did a great job calling the plays. Obviously he has a defensive background. You could tell it definitely wasn’t his first rodeo,” he laughed. “We placed our trust in coach Eberflus and that’s the most important thing in this game, when you can trust the person beside you, and trust the coaching staff. We trusted coach Eberflus to be the person in charge of the play-calling. Guys bought in. We wanted to go out there and make plays for him. We definitely played even harder.”

The Quarterback

There was no way we were letting Tremaine Edmunds escape without talking about his new quarterback. Caleb Williams arrived in April to replace the departed Justin Fields. While he’s only been around for a couple of months, it feels like he has already had an impact. Even Edmunds admits the kid has certain qualities that could become something special not too long from now.

“Obviously I was with Josh Allen for five years. I’ve been with Caleb Williams for a few weeks,” he chuckled. “We’re still learning about one another. I can see the early glimpses of something special though. His leadership, the way he goes about his business, it’s impressive.

His competitive nature is the first thing that jumped out at me. Any NFL player in general, you need to be competitive. I definitely see that in Caleb Williams, for sure.”

Expectations and Future Goals

Looking ahead, Edmunds didn’t shy away from thinking big. “Our goal is to be the best defense in the league. We have the talent and the coaching to achieve that, and I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to help us get there,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of staying healthy and maintaining peak physical condition. “In this league, durability is key. I focus a lot on my training and recovery to ensure I’m at my best every game,” Edmunds revealed.

One way he does this is by eating lots of Campbell’s Soup. He is particularly fond of the new Chunky Spicy Nashville-Style Hot Chicken Soup. It has 13 grams of protein and is seasoned with delicious spices to bring that authentic southern heat. Edmunds was actually eating it during the interview.

“I actually have a bowl in front of me right now as we speak (laughs). It’s actually really good. I grew up on spicy food with bold flavors, Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, things of that nature. Seeing all these new flavors come out, it feels like a throwback to my childhood. It’s fascinating,” he said.

As the Bears prepare for the upcoming season, fans can look forward to seeing Edmunds all over the field, leading the defense with his trademark intensity and skill. His presence is expected to elevate the performance of those around him, creating a ripple effect that could propel the Bears to new heights.

Conclusion

Tremaine Edmunds is not just a linebacker; he is the heartbeat of the Bears’ defense, poised to leave a lasting legacy in Chicago. We sincerely thank him for being gracious enough to interview with Sports Mockery. Training camp begins on July 26th, and fans will once again get to see him and the rest of the Bears’ defense go to work. Stay tuned for more in-depth coverage and analysis of Chicago sports.
