The Nevada State Athletic Commission turned down two July 16th opponents for Cancio
After multiple false starts, former super featherweight champion Andrew Cancio will once again attempt to make his Top Rank debut on September 12th when he faces Saul Rodriguez in a 131-pound bout at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.
Though nothing is yet official, Egidijus Kavaliauskas vs. Amir Imam and Miguel Marriaga vs. Joet Gonzalez have both been linked to that date.
Cancio (21-5-2, 16 KO) twice attempted to land an opponent for July 16th, only for the Nevada State Athletic Commission to deny both Manny Rojas and Cesar Valenzuela as valid foes. The same NSAC let Shakur Stevenson demolish Felix Caraballo and greenlit every other mismatch Top Rank has put forth this summer, so make of that what you will.
They’ll hopefully find Rodriguez (24-1-1, 18 KO) more palatable. The 27-year-old had a decent prospect rise going, earning himself a breakdown from our own Radu way back in 2016, but remained fairly inactive and never really took the next step before getting blown up by Miguel Angel Gonzalez last year. He took five rounds to stop 4-12-5 Josh Ross in his first fight back this past February.
Both men are currently in the rebuilding stage and tend to put on entertaining fights, so barring further executive meddling, this should be a fun one.
