GAVIN And Stacey was the biggest thing on the box this festive season – but eagle-eyed fans noticed a ‘rookie mistake’ in the show’s grand finale.
The tear-jerker of a special ended with Smithy and Nessa finally tying the knot – after a five-year cliffhanger following Nessa’s shock proposal at the end of the last Christmas special.

But fans got what they craved when Smithy, aided by Gavin and Stacey‘s nearest and dearest, fled his and fiancée Sonia’s wedding to drive to Southampton Port to intercept Nessa before she took to the seas having turned her back on Barry Island.
Driven by former love rival Dave Coaches, the group made it just in time for Smithy to pour his heart out to Nessa on the deck of a boat.
At first she told him plainly that she wouldn’t ask him to marry her again, forcing him to swallow his pride and propose.
Nessa eventually accepted, paving the way for a registry office wedding in front of the show’s most popular faces.
Amid all the drama it was easy to miss a production error that gave away the port scene wasn’t filmed where it claimed to be.
Signs on the set read ‘Port of Southampton’, however, locals quickly realised it couldn’t have been filmed in their city as certain features simply didn’t match up.
And they were right, because the scenes were shot in Newport Docks, Wales, more than 120 miles away.
One person said: “Hills in the background sounds like a rookie mistake.”
Another posted on Facebook: “Being someone who has worked in Southampton docks, I can tell you it wasn’t Southampton docks.”
Ultimately, the gaffe didn’t spoil the episode which was watched by a staggering 12.3million people.
Writers and co-stars James Corden, 46, and Ruth Jones, 58, reunited to watch the programme as it aired.
They posed for a selfie beforehand, which James posted on social media, alongside the caption: “We had to be together to watch tonight.”
