Other outlets report the victim had his throat deeply slit and had been “practically decapitated”.
Both prisoners had been staying in the prison’s arrivals wing for several weeks when the shocking killing happened.
Prison sources told Le Parisien: “It had been several days that they had not gotten along – he could no longer stand [him].”
The attacker was a homeless man who was jailed for six months for possession and transportation of narcotics.
He was taken to a police station following the killing.
The victim was in prison on remand after being accused of drugs charges.
The French Minister of Justice Didier Migaud said: “I confirm to you that a crime was committed, I cannot comment further but I confirm it.”
The killing is the latest crisis in France’s prisons, coming after drug kingpin ‘The Fly’ escaped in May.
Mohamed Amra was being moved in a convoy when a black car smashed into the prison van and masked gunmen shot down the guards.
The “highly dangerous” dealer, convicted of attempted murder, is now the subject of a nationwide manhunt.
