I’m an interior decorator and here’s how to freshen up each room on a budget

HOME interior trends are constantly changing and it can leave us feeling dissatisfied with our own spaces.

And since it’s become all too easy to scroll through different styles and designs on social media pages and Instagram, we’re never short of inspiration to give our homes a new look.

But the downside is that we can sometimes be left disheartened with how our own home looks.

And not everyone has the time or the money to keep refreshing rooms and changing up the decor.

Luckily, one decorator is on hand to share the simple tricks you can do to change up your home without breaking the bank.

Lucy Steele, paint and interiors expert from Valspar Paint, told The Scottish Sun how you can change up your decor, in each room, on a budget.

Kitchen

Everyone knows that the kitchen is the heart of the home, so it’s no surprise that we all want it to look the best it can.

But that doesn’t mean you need to go and buy a whole new kitchen to keep up with the current trends.

According to Lucy, all you need is a lick of paint to make it feel like a new space.

She said: “No need to splash out on a new kitchen, instead give the kitchen cupboards a ‘glow up’ with a lick of paint.

“White, such as White Hot, is probably the most versatile of all colour choices when it comes to kitchen cupboards, as it offers the most versatile styling options for all types of kitchens.

“Fresh, white kitchen units have the ability to brighten up any space, regardless of whether it is super modern or classic and traditional.”

Living Room

While the kitchen is the heart of the home, we spend most of our time in our houses in the living room.

It is often the central room of the place and starting at the walls so often can see us quickly become sick of it.

And if you’re starting to feel that way, Lucy recommends adding a feature wall to spruce the place up.

She explains: “If you’re bored with your living room, then why not add a feature wall to the space?

“Feature walls have the ability to bring life and personality to any space, as well as accentuate the soft furnishings in the room.

“When creating a feature wall, opt for the wall that naturally draws attention, for example, the wall that slopes the least, and look to add a subtle contrast, such as a slightly darker or more vibrant shade in your existing colour scheme.”

Bedroom

Our bedrooms are where we come to relax, drift off, and wind down after a long day.

So if you feel like a dated look is beginning to stress you out, the experts recommend grabbing a paintbrush.

Lucy says: “It might sound simple, but a simple lick of paint on tired-looking walls can help to revamp any room in the home, especially in the bedroom.

“Whether you want to stick with the same colour, or choose a different colour scheme, it’s important the colour in a bedroom creates a serene and calming atmosphere, perfect for a good night’s sleep!”

Bathroom

Installing a brand-new bathroom can be super expensive – so if you’re looking to refresh the room, try adding some accessories first to save yourself a small fortune.

Lucy suggests: “A new bathroom can definitely come at a high price, however, there are plenty of other things you can do to revamp a bathroom space without it costing too much.

“The key is to incorporate low-cost accessories into the space, such as different coloured towels, candles, new soap holders, and even artwork.

“Buying new taps, handles and light fixtures doesn’t have to be too expensive either.

“And it can really have a really big impact on the overall look and feel of the space.”
