The local Civil Guard was informed at around 4pm as they launched an immediate probe into who the man was.
He is understood to have been in his 60s or 70s, according to well placed sources who also said he was British.
It is still unclear if the man was a tourist in Spain or if he lived on the island.
Officials believe he was most likely out by the Malgrats Islands – a set of two uninhabited islets opposite the Bay of Santa Ponsa – before his death.
The Malgrats Islands Natural Reserve is regarded as a tourist friendly area to go snorkelling due to the clear waters.
A number of hotels offer tours down to the islands with local guides putting on excursions to dive down and explore the cave system beneath the sea.
Officials are yet to confirm his cause of death despite drowning being the most likely reason at this stage.
They are still investigating if a previous health problem may have taken its toll before he got into difficulties.
A police source said this afternoon: “The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”
The Civil Guard has also announced they are reporting to a court in Palma ahead of the post-mortem.
A number of British tourists have tragically died recently in freak accidents abroad.
A man was found dead at one of Majorca’s top golf courses after suffering a fatal head injury last week.
The unnamed tourist, 61, was found on Friday evening at around 8pm alive but in a “serious condition” with a nasty injury to his head.
He disappeared on his own during a round with his friends at the huge course to try and find a stray ball.
Initial reports said the Brit was believed to have been hit on the head by a golf ball during this time.
A 56-year-old was also left fighting for his life after trying to jump 10ft from a balcony into a swimming pool in Cyprus earlier this month.
The man attempted a daring leap off the ledge into the pool below at his villa but ended up hitting the pavement before being rushed to hospital in a serious condition.
Another Brit was rushed to hospital after plunging 15ft off his hotel balcony in Majorca.
The man was left “seriously injured” as he landed on his head in broad daylight after a row with friends.
