A MUM was left distraught after hospital staff ‘mixed up’ her newborn twins, leaving her unsure which baby was which.
Saffron Crisp says that the mix-up during delivery turned her well laid plans upside down.
She had carefully chosen names for her twin girls before they were born but when midwives pulled out the “wrong” baby first, her plan was thrown into chaos.
She explains: “My consultant came in, he said they pulled the wrong baby out first.
“The first baby out is Delilah, the second baby out is Azayla when it was supposed to be the other way around”
Saffron admits that the experience left her ‘distraught’.
The mum adds: “Everything happened so fast.
“I was taking up for my C section at 11:10 and they were out by 11:35.
“I only got a quick glance at both babies, so I had no idea what had happened.”
It was only when Saffron and partner Lewey Ward, 24, saw a discrepancy in their daughters’ size that they noticed something had gone wrong.
“My partner and I put two and two together when we saw the size of the twins,” Saffron explained.
“We knew they made a mistake.
“At the time, I was very overwhelmed and confused on how this could happen.
“I was also frustrated, as we had named the girls based on who would be arriving first.”
The mum from Ipswich, Suffolk, UK, told how she named her twins whilst they were still in the womb.
Labelled baby A and baby B, she called A, Delilah and B, Azayla presuming they would be born in that order.
The confusion started when Saffron, who had been planning for a natural birth, was rushed in for an emergency C-section.
She was told that Baby A would be born first, but that wasn’t what happened.
After the birth, the 24-year-old noticed something wasn’t right.
Azayla, who had been the larger twin throughout her pregnancy, was suddenly the smaller of the two.
Despite the mix-up, Saffron and her partner decided not to switch the names back, even though they couldn’t be sure which twin was which anymore.
She said: “Twin A was the smaller twin, she was closest to the exit and we were told twin A was going to be coming out first regardless.
“When they pulled the babies out they just flashed me a quick little look at them over the screen and then Delilah was swept off to NICU.
“Through the whole pregnancy Azayla was my bigger baby so I was given her and I thought ‘oh my god she’s tiny like how small is Delilah gonna be?’
“Delilah is going to be half the size of her and I was panicking because I thought she was going to be in the NICU for ages.
“But when they wheeled Delilah in my room six hours later she was humongous.”
The couple have now come to terms with the babies’ new names.

My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could – partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we’d only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two.
How wrong we were…
I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I’d already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I’ve had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby names…something which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear.
With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can’t help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it’s something that none of them would mind in the slightest – it’s a total me problem!
The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums – can you choose the same name that was a “potential” for a friend’s baby?
It’s a very divisive topic and opinions are always mixed…and I don’t want to be THAT person.
While some will argue there’s thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR favourite…after all, there’s no guarantee that person will even have another baby.
Then there’s also the issue of finding a name you adore…only to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can’t shake off.
I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won’t reveal it because I don’t want to ruin it for others!) …only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead.
So, back to the drawing board we went..
Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as ‘baby gal’ for a little while longer!
“We said we’re not going to swap them back because she is an Azayla through and through and she is a Delilah.
“You look at them and they just look like their names and I think even if they come out the right way around I probably would have switched them.”
Amanda Price-Davey is the Director of Midwifery at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust which runs Ipswich Hospital.
She said: “Congratulations to Saffron and her family on the birth of twins.
“What happened with Saffron during her caesarean section delivery isn’t unusual. During pregnancy we would refer to the baby who was nearest the cervix at the bottom of the womb, as twin one and the other baby twin two.
“This is because if born vaginally, twin one would usually then be born first, followed by twin two. We have to identify them in this way so that we can accurately track their development on scans and don’t mix them up.
“When babies are born by caesarean section, when the babies’ exit is through the lower abdomen, then the surgical team may often reach twin two first.
“After birth, whoever arrives in the world first, is referred to as twin one.”
