A BIZARRE charging issue plaguing Samsung’s newest lineup of Fold phones has caused the paint to peel off some devices.
Fans have dubbed it “insane”, with the devices only hitting shelves in late July for £1,799/ $1,900 apiece.
Some buyers of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, unveiled just weeks ago, have reported flecks of paint falling off their new phones.
After an outcry on social media, Samsung has responded saying third-party charging cables and other accessories are at fault.
“Before being released to the public, Samsung devices and accessories undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are safe and function properly,” Samsung wrote in a recent support page.
“However, if a user attempts to use an incompatible third-party product with their Samsung device, there is a risk of inadvertently causing damage, such as paint peeling, to the device.”
The company said “leakage current” was to blame, which occurs when you use a charger that is not properly grounded.
Samsung added that it can also happen when using a Electrical Muscle Stimulation – or EMS – massager which is powered by the device.
To prevent paint peeling off your device, Samsung has urged consumers to use official Samsung chargers.
A number of consumers aren’t convinced by Samsung’s reasoning, and say they have been using third-party charging accessories with no issue.
“I haven’t used an official Samsung charger since I got my phone and guess what? Not a single bit of paint flaking,” one onlooker wrote on Reddit.
“I am in the UK and we use three pin plugs and our outlets have to be grounded.”
While others are simply glad they didn’t upgrade to the new device.
“Thank God I returned my Fold 6,” a second person wrote. “For a $2,000 dollar product you would expect it to be solid quality.”
Another replied, saying: “Thank God I didn’t upgrade from my blue Fold 5 (that never chipped or peeled).
“For that money, it should last longer than a few weeks.”
A fourth person noted: “Though it sounds insane….. it also sounds totally plausible.”
