ERIM Kaur’s mum was known for her long hair.
She tragically passed away from cancer when Erim was just eight-years-old – but her death sparked a seven-figure business that keeps her memory alive.
Business-minded Erim set up a hair oil brand after spending days trialling the likes of onion juice and eggs for luscious locks.
“My mum died when I was eight and one of the things she was known for was her long hair,” the 29-year-old tells.
“I would always just really admire her hair… and her beauty.
“So, when she passed, I really really missed that.
“In her memory, I vowed to preserve the beauty and significance of her long hair, which was tragically lost during her brave battle with cancer.”
Erim, from London, is the proud owner of eponymous haircare label, ByErim.
Whilst living with her dad during her childhood, she would spend almost every weekend at her grandma’s house.
There, they would dedicate the time to scouring recipe books and shops to “preserve the essence” of her mum’s hair and find the golden recipe that would aid natural, but fast, hair growth.
“Together, we spent years in her kitchen, testing out a myriad of unconventional and quirky concoctions,” Erim says.
“Through countless trials and tribulations, we persisted until we discovered the perfect combination – the key to preserving the essence of my mother’s hair.”
The duo sampled a variety of recipes – with some more appealing than others.
Ingredients included onion juice and egg, as well as yoghurt.
“The moment of revelation marked a turning point in my life,” Erim adds.
“I knew that I had a responsibility to share this incredible formula with the world.”
Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growtn cycle are: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen
Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed.
During the Anagen Phase, hair grows around half an inch a month [about six inches a year], and faster in the summer than in winter.
This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.
Catagen Phase: Following the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair.
Approximately three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any time and it lasts for around 10 days.
Telogen Phase: The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
An estimate of 10-15 percent of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given moment.
The Telogen Phase lasts around three months or 100 days.
Exogen Phase: The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out.
Now the whole process begins again.
Since launching in December 2019, she has sold 75,000 bottles of hair oil and has scaled the haircare brand to be a seven-figure business.
After just two years of operation, Erim had grown the business to have over £145,000 cash in the bank, Companies House documents show.
Each ByErim formula – which has branched into the world of scalp scrubs as well as oils – aims to help women have long, healthy hair.
