And at the end of that series Dexter was fatally shot and killed by his estranged son Harrison (Jack Alcott).
It has since been announced the show has landed a sequel titled Dexter: Resurrection, and Michael would once again return.
Fans have been understandably confused – but the actor has spoken out about his comeback to the series for the first time.
When asked by Variety about the upcoming series due to be released in 2025, he admitted that the writers will start “right where we left off”.
He explained: “I don’t know what I am authorised to say other than, it’s really cold out there.”
Another fan favourite character was Dexter’s adoptive sister Deb (Jennifer Morgan), who was later his boss.
When asked, the star did not rule out the return of any character in the upcoming show.
“Never say never. This world has sort of magical element,” he explained.
“So I wouldn’t definitively say no to any proposition … There’s a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge.”
Dexter follows the life of Dexter Morgan (Hall), who disguises himself as a police officer working in Miami by day, and is a serial killer by night.
The first series back in 2006 was watched by millions worldwide, and the finale was seen by over 2.8million people alone.
This was the largest audience to ever tune into the Showtime network at the time.
“There’s something about this world, something about this character that captivates people,” said the actor.
“It’s hard to say. I think there’s many different ways this show appeals to people as there are people who watch it.
“But I think maybe a biding thing is, in a world in which we feel a sense of being out of control people like spending time with a character who’s taking his own, unique control of his little corner of the world.
“I think we all have our shadow side that we contend with and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most.
He added: “People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way.
“People, I think, relish the invitation to identify with someone who is contending with this much darkness, and maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable — even though he’s doing what he’s doing.”
The first eight series of Dexter are available to view on Netflix.
