A BID to open a fifth McDonald’s in a 5-mile radius has stirred up concerns that it will make a town’s “large obese population” even more unhealthy.
The planned site is only five miles from an existing site of the same fast-food chain in Thanet, Kent, where almost 70% of people are classified as overweight or obese.
With such a high level of obesity in the area, the new drive-thru has raised concerns over whether further junk food outlets in the region are needed.
A public consultation has found that 60% of Thanet locals are against the plans, emphasising that there is no “need for any more unhealthy junk food outlets.”
The proposed outlet is planned to be built within driving distance of McDonald’s restaurants in Margate, Minster, Sandwich and Broadstairs which has two.
244 people reacted to the public consultation ahead of plans for the 73-cover restaurant to be approved by Thanet District Council.
Obesity, defined by having a BMI of over 30, is one of England’s toughest issues to tackle according to The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID).
Residents of Thanet are already at risk with official data revealing the obesity and overweight levels to be the highest in the south east.
Of those living in Thanet a startling 69.7% are overweight or obese, with 28.8% of these to have a BMI over 30, according to data from Public Health England.
Some believe the plans could open up opportunities for those looking for work in the area with an expected 120 new jobs.
One resident told KentOnline: “I believe that this will be a great benefit to the local area, creating much-needed jobs! Plus it’s across the road from me and I love your sausage and egg McMuffins!”
However, others were not in agreement.
“We have five McDonald’s already within 10 minutes,” one exclaimed.
Another resident said: “There are far too many McDonald’s in Thanet already! Not counting the one at Sandwich.
“How is this supporting local food choice?
“The choices are all junk-food, highly calorific and we already have a large obese population, give us something healthy!”
Ramsgate town centre councillor, Raushan Ara is in agreement: “The fewer fast food places – including McDonald’s – we have, the better in my opinion.”
In response to the concerns, McDonald’s have published a statement addressing the individual concerns that have been raised from their public consultation.
The fast-food chain have highlighted the trouble in tackling obesity saying that it “recognises the importance of public health and shares the collective goal of reducing childhood obesity.”
According to the fast-food giant, 54% of their menu is now classified as not being high in fat, sugar or salt and 89% of their core menu items are under 500 calories.
If approved, the multi-million pound investment will sit next to the town’s Tesco superstore and accommodate up to 29 cars.
Last week the fast-food giant added seven new items on offer with both new and returning favorites.
The new range includes the Milkybar Raspberry Ripple McFlurry and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry.
McDonald’s customers can also get their hands on new Cheesy Garlic Bread Dippers.
They are made of mozzarella and flavoured with garlic and chives in a ciabatta-style breadcrumb coating, served with rich tomato dip.
