GREAT BRITAIN’S women’s basketball match against Germany has been abandoned due to a medical incident in the crowd.
The British national team were taking part in an exhibition game at London‘s Copper Box Arena against a German side set to compete at the Paris Olympics.
The game was called off with Germany leading 54-43 at the end of the third quarter.
At the end of the period, GB guard Faye Endean appeared to suffer a serious injury.
As Endean, who left the arena on crutches, was assisted off the court for more treatment, a fan ran towards the Germany bench to alert them to an issue in the crowd.
Medics then rushed into the stands to assist the spectator, with sheets raised around them for privacy.
After around six minutes of treatment, the fan was taken away on a stretcher.
Following deliberation between both teams, a decision was made to end the game.
Speaking to SunSport after the contest, Germany and Dallas Wings star Satou Sabally said: “I hope all the best for both families affected.
“Hard times come sometimes, unfortunately it’s part of sports and part of the sports world. Obviously health comes as first priority.”
A GB Basketball statement read: “During the Great Britain Women vs Germany showcase (July 21st) a medical incident occurred involving a member of the general public. Following consultation with key stakeholders the decision was taken to abandon the game.
“British Basketball Federation want to extend thanks to both Great Britain and Germany for a fantastic display of the sport, and to the fans for their support and understanding under the circumstances.”
Germany will be back in action in East London on Tuesday night, when they take on the USA at the 02 Arena.
On today’s contest against Great Britain, two-time WNBA All-Star Sabally added: “The game was good.
“Obviously right now I don’t think too much about the game because others things take the upper hand.
“But I think we can do better. Obviously we’re on our way to the Olympics and we have a high standard so completing the game a little bit different would have been better.”
Sabally, 26, has been nursing a shoulder injury and has not played this year, but is set to return next time out against the US.
On her own status, she revealed: “I’m good. I just landed two days ago, that’s why I didn’t play today.
“But I’m feeling good and I can’t wait to play against USA. Ready to go.”
