Disturbing footage revealed fire crews battling huge flames from the road.
There were no injuries and it appears no arrests have been made.
The Met Police have now launched a probe into the cause of the mystery fire.
Locals have banded together to help raise money for the ice cream van owner, who dubbed the incident a “huge blow”, and set up a CrowdFunding page.
“I’ve been serving this community for years, and to see my van go up in flames is heartbreaking,” revealed the truck owner anonymously.
Meanwhile, some onlookers tried to approach the situation with a touch of light-hearted humour.
One remarked: “At least they won’t be short of cones to cordon off the area.”
“Looks like it went up like a Rocket…the van owner is certainly not having a Fab day,” another joked.
After footage of the fire circulated on social media, others were quick to add their puns.
“I’d say the damage caused would be in the hundreds and thousands,” commented one.
Someone else quipped: “Need Magnum P.I on the case to find the cause.”
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade commented: “We responded quickly to the incident and managed to contain the fire, preventing further damage to nearby properties.
“Our team is now working to identify the cause of the fire.”
