SOMETIMES, when people get to a certain age, the clothes they wear might be deemed ‘unacceptable’ or ‘too young.’
This is what happened to one mum when she asked for advice on Mumsnet about wearing a bikini on holiday with her teenage son.
The poster, going by the username Behappyandbehave, shared she was 40 years old and recently bought some new bikinis which were ‘thong style’ after losing weight.
She explained she originally intended to save wearing them for a holiday with her husband but was curious about people’s views if she were to wear them while away with her teen son.
In the post titled ‘Wearing a bikini around teenage son’ she wrote: “I have treated myself to some new bikinis for an upcoming beach holiday and some are thong styles.
“I did originally buy the thong ones for when me and DH [darling husband] go away later in the year alone.
“But every holiday I go on abroad there are so many people younger and older than me showing all their bums!
“When I was a teen it was rare, but not anymore. Just not sure I’m brave enough or if it would be a massive no with adult/teen children!”
She then asked the online community what they would do.
The post has racked up over 600 comments, with many slamming the woman for wanting to wear something so revealing around her child.
“My son would die of cringe if I did this to him. Why would you?” one person asked.
Another penned: “I think the trend for thong bikinis is awful, whatever your figure and whether you have teenage kids to embarrass or not.
“They just look horrendous. Not classy.”
A third commented: “I’ll happily wear a regular bikini around 15-year-old DS [darling son] but I’d draw the line and a thong one sorry!
“He’d die of embarrassment.”
“I’d bet the odds are excellent that your son would not want to see your a*** crack being flossed by a bit of fabric.
“He’d probably rather scoop his eyeballs out,” said somebody else.
Even teens themselves got involved with one writing: “As a teen, I would have refused to go to the beach with my mum or dad in a thong!”
However, others were more supportive of the bikini wearing.
One person said: “Do what you like! Why would it be inappropriate?
“What I think is appropriate is teaching children bodies come in all shapes and sizes and ages and we shouldn’t be ashamed of any of them.”
“My sons have been used to seeing me with it all hanging out since they were born so they wouldn’t bat an eyelid, even now as adults.
“My daughters have been used to seeing their dad naked from the day they were born and they wouldn’t bat an eyelid even now at him being naked.
I’d bet the odds are excellent that your son would not want to see your a*** crack being flossed by a bit of fabric.
“Do what you’re comfortable with,” wrote a second.
“Wear whatever you want. It’s how you feel.
“My reality changed when I visited a Berlin park (and loads of other places) many families were enjoying the sun in bikinis or completely nudo! It’s a culture thing,” commented a third.

She said: “I think I’ve made my decision [laughing face emoji] but I do disagree that they look awful on everyone.
Some people look great! I wouldn’t describe my arse as perfect but I would say it’s ok for a thong (just maybe not with the teens!) DH would love it.
“We are staying at a private rental in Sep so will save them for then!”
