A MUM has been left ”outraged” after her kid’s school announced it would allow children to arrive at 10am on Monday so they could watch the England football team play in the big Euro 2024 final last night.
Schools across the nation are letting pupils a late start today after the Euros 2024 final – but whilst some kids are happy about the lie-in, one mother has expressed her utter ”disgust” over the news.
The grand finale, which saw the England Football Team clash with Spain, kicked off at 8pm and could’ve potentially lasted until 11pm if it had gone to penalties.
The parent, named Liz, from West Sussex, spoke about her shock that the school would authorise a leave for a football match, Daily Star reported.
The 39-year-old said that while fellow parents in her son’s peers appeared to be pleased with the announcement, she was left infuriated by what she thought were double standards of the education system.
She explained: “The government and schools are preaching about low attendance in schools and children needing to catch up on lessons post COVID lockdowns, yet they are missing out on lessons on Monday for a football match.
Liz, who works as a radiographer, and her hubby, an engineer, said they couldn’t let their son go to school late on Monday, even if he did want to follow the match, which saw England lose 2:1.
The mother vented: “It’s an important lesson to learn. If you stay up late for something fun, you have to honour your responsibilities the next day.
”I don’t go out late if I know I have work the next day. It’s something everyone has to figure out.”
She went on: “I’ve paid upfront for Breakfast Club, I don’t want to waste that money, and I work in an NHS hospital my patients aren’t going to wait.
”Once again, it’s the middle-class parent paying the price for everyone else.”
Fuming at the late start, Liz – whose family is not interested in football – also highlighted that schools should then also authorise leave for any sport they like watching.
The 39-year-old, who prefers tennis and ice hockey, also shared her concerns about the culture surrounding the sport, with football matches ending in ”fan violence and fights”.
Liz spoke about the friendly and welcoming atmosphere at hockey matches, where ”all the supporters are sat mixed together”.
Although there is ”rivalry”, the hockey super fan claimed that ”no one is rude to each other or aggressive”.
”There have been countless incidents of fans attacking each other during the Euros. I don’t want my children engaged with something like that.”

While many children and pupils are sure to have stayed up last night to tune in the final match of the tournament, Liz confirmed the family would be sticking to their routine, ensuring her son got his sleep and attends school today with no fuss.
However, Liz said that she’s ”asked several questions in an email to the school” on the curriculum – but so far was yet to hear back.
But while pupils got a late start today, 2 MILLION Brits called in sick after England’s defeat yesterday.
Commuters are also facing travel chaos today as trains to and from London Euston are disrupted.
Meanwhile, discount chain Lidl also opened an hour later than usual, giving its 30,000 staff extra time in bed to recover from the late night.
