IF you see a red light on the front of your Roku device, it’s extremely serious.
You need to act right away – it’s too dangerous to ignore.
The red light is one of two signs that indicates that “your Roku player is too hot,” the streaming giant explains.
Importantly, this is only the case if it’s a solid red light. If it’s flashing, that means your Roku player doesn’t have enough power.
If your Roku player is indeed dangerously hot then you should see an on-screen warning message too.
It’ll pop up in the corner with a message that reads: “Your device is overheating.”
This can happen for multiple reasons.
For instance, it might be because the streaming box is inside of a cabinet or an enclosed space.
This is especially likely if it’s crammed into the space with other electronic equipment, Roku warns.
Thankfully there are some steps that you can take to fix the problem.
But Roku notes, “Be careful! The unit may be hot.”
Roku says the first step should be to carefully unplug the power cable.
Then allow it to cool down, which may take some time.
Roku recommends waiting at least 10 minutes.
Next you’ll want to find a cooler place to put the Roku player to avoid the device overheating again.
Roku warns users to avoid placing it:
Once the box is cool, plug the power cable back in and wait for it to power on.
If you’re still seeing the solid red light or a warning message then immediately unplug it.
Repeat the steps above again once more to see if that fixes it.
“If the problem persists, then you should stop using your Roku player,” Roku warns.
If you’re finding that your Roku Streaming Stick is overheating, you have another solution.
Roku says that you can try using a free HDMI extender to plug the stick in.
This will move it away from the back of your TV, which may fix overheating issues.
