WHEN you drink from a plastic bottle you may have spotted that some lids stay attached now to help with recycling.
But it turns out you may be using your lid all wrong – according to one Coca Cola fan.
Instead of peeling back the lid, they opened it and pulled it forwards over the top.
The benefit of this method was that it doesn’t catch on your lip as you sip your drink.
TikTok user @davebold1 shared: “So this is how these daft lids are meant to be used.”
He joked about the year 2024: “There was me thinking be flying cars and stuff. Nope lids on juice bottles that dont come off.”
His video has racked up over 50,000 likes, and people praised his way of using the lids.
One wrote: “Oh my. I’ve been pulling it back and either getting it pinged back in my face when taking a drink or it gets in the way whilst taking a drink.”
Another added: “And here is me scraping my nose with every sip.”
We previously shared how people had started noticing Coca Cola rolling out new caps to their bottles across Britain in 2022.
The caps are attached to 1.5L and 500ml bottles and don’t come off when you open your drink.
The change can also be spotted on Fanta, Sprite and Dr Pepper bottles.
The move comes as Coca Cola attempts to ensure all parts of their recyclable bottles actually end up in the recycling bin.
It aims to make it easier for people to bin their drinks when they’re finished but Coke drinkers on X, formerly known as Twitter, weren’t convinced at the time.
One wrote: “Not gonna lie. That new attached cap design is annoying.”
A second moaned that the cap “gets in the way when you drink it” and another called it the “worst idea ever”.
“Still needs work on getting it to stay out of the way whilst pouring/drinking and doesn’t mean I recycle more as always did,” another chimed in.

This change also reduces the likelihood of the small caps becoming litter.
In June 2019, it was decided that single-use bottles under three litres with plastic caps and lids would only be permitted if the caps and lids remained attached during use and storage.
This regulation took effect on July 3, 2024.
Although the UK is no longer part of the EU, many brands have implemented the new bottles in the UK market as well.
Announcing the change last year, a Coca-Cola spokesperson said: “Attached caps on bottles make it easier to keep all parts of our packaging together, so it’s easier to collect and recycle every part of a drinks bottle once you’re done with it.
“This new design ensures that when Coca‑Cola customers recycle our bottles, no cap gets left behind, helping to boost collection and recycling, and reduce litter.”
Some people hadn’t even realised it was a new design and had been snapping the lids off anyway.
“Genuinely thought I’d bought a couple of defectively moulded caps of late on the 2l bottles,” said one person.
And another said: “Been cutting them off. Surely you screw back on once finished though right?”
But others welcomed the change as worth it “for the planet”.
“I get the point but they’re bl***y annoying LOL But I’ll make the sacrifice for the planet,” said one woman.
Coca Cola said the switch was set to be completed on all plastic bottles by early 2024.
Jon Woods, general manager at Coca‑Cola Great Britain, said: “This is a small change that we hope will have a big impact, ensuring that when consumers recycle our bottles, no cap gets left behind.”
