But a Westminster insider said: “Sir Keir Starmer has been thinking about putting David Miliband in as US ambassador.
“He already lives in America and has lots of connections.”
It would be a shock return to the Labour inner circle by David Miliband – who was famously beaten to the job of Labour leader by his younger brother Ed Miliband.
David is a former foreign secretary.
Since quitting as an MP, he has been president of the International Rescue Committee – a major humanitarian relief charity.
The job means he and his family live in the US.
David fell out spectacularly with his brother Ed over the bitter battle to replace Gordon Brown and become Labour leader in 2010.
He used to be Labour MP for South Shields.
