Sobbing teacher Rebecca Joynes who had sex with two pupils including one she had baby with while on bail is jailed

A DISGRACED teacher who had sex with two teen pupils including one she had a baby with while on bail sobbed as she was jailed today.

Rebecca Joynes, 30, preyed on the two boys in her maths class before striking up relationships with both of them.

The “sexual predator” groomed one boy, 15, with a £345 Gucci belt before sleeping with him twice at her Salford flat.

She also bedded a 16-year-old – named as Boy B – on 30 different occasions before having a baby with him.

Joynes has now been jailed for six-and-a-half years after being convicted of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two while being a person in a position of trust.

Sentencing, Judge Kate Cornell said Joynes showed “breathtaking gall” and “astonishing arrogance”.

In a victim impact statement, Boy B told how he was “coerced, controlled and sexually abused” by the teacher.

He said he went through a “very dark time” after being abused, which had a “tremendous impact” on him.

The boy added: “It tore my family apart, they struggled to come to terms with the fact they brought me to school which was supposed to be a safe environment. My parents broke down every day and night.

“When she was released on bail in November, I really struggled and wondered how my abuser could be walking free.

“I had a panic attack seeing the news, I’d never had a panic attack before. I struggled to understand how she takes no responsibility.”

He told the court he felt “backed into a corner” by Joynes and had lived a double life for 18 months while the abuse was ongoing.

The boy added: “The term ‘victim’ has been used to describe myself and Boy A, but it’s bigger than that. It reaches further than us. All our families have been profoundly impacted.”

Manchester Crown Court heard how Joynes’ vile crimes unfolded in 2021 when she set her sights on Boy A.

The former gymnast – known as “Bunda Becky” – gave the 15-year-old the first ten digits of her number and asked him to guess the last one.

He then messaged her saying “hi”, and when she failed to reply, he told her in class: “So, you’re just ignoring me then?”

The pair began texting in a “normal” way at first but Joynes then asked if he wanted to meet up.

He told the court: “I remember saying, ‘Surely you’re joking?’

“And she said: ‘No, I’m not’.”

In one set of texts, the pair discussed him going to her flat, with the teen asking if they were still on or not.

Joynes replied: “You better had come now you told me you are.”

In another exchange, they joked about another pupil joining them before Boy A tells his teacher he should be “the only one”.

Joynes responded: “Obviously it’s only you.”

Boy A then said: “As it should be. Best student by far.”

Footage showed shameless Joynes smirking as she bought the teen a lavish belt in Selfridges.

The pair were then seen returning to her flat in Salford via a back gate – with the Gucci shopping bag visible.

Laughing Joynes even told him to “shut up” when he mentioned his age.

They had unprotected sex twice, before Joynes told him: “No one had better find out”.

But the teen had taken a photo of his teacher lying down on the bed which, coupled with a love bite, caused rumours to swirl.

The following day, his “distraught” mum received a call from the school saying an allegation had been made.

When he was confronted, Boy A at first claimed it was just a “stupid conversation” with his mates that got out of control.

But his mum later received another call – this time from the mother of a teen where Boy A claimed he was staying when he was actually with Joynes to inform her he was never there.

The messages also revealed their plans to meet up

police investigation was launched in October 2021 and Joynes was suspended then arrested.

Bodycam showed the wide-mouthed teacher asking cops “are you serious?” when she was detained at her flat.

She was later bailed on the condition she did not contact any child under 18.

Despite this, Joynes “brazenly” set her sights on a second pupil – Boy B – when he was aged 15.

This progressed into a sexual relationship when he turned 16 after Joynes sent a racy snap of her bum.

She also wrote the teen a gushing note describing him as “perfect”.

It read: “I know we are struggling right now and are both extremely stressed.

“But I really hope we can work something out to keep this going for a while longer.

“Every inch of you is perfect and you are all I ever dream about.”

Once he turned 16, the boy went to Joynes’ flat where she straddled and kissed him before taking his virginity.

The pair later went on to have sex at least 30 times in “numerous different places”.

Joynes told Boy B it was “nearly impossible” for her to get pregnant because she had polycystic ovary syndrome.

But he went to her flat for “date night” and was presented with pizza, scattered rose petals and an Ann Summers scratchcard of sexual activities.

A twisted treasure hunt led to a babygrow that said “I love my daddy to the moon and back”.

Boy B told the court he reacted by saying: “What the f**k?”

He said Joynes was crying and told him “I don’t know if I can do this on my own”.

The boy also told jurors he tried to end the relationship after believing Joynes was “emotionally abusing” him.

How shamed teacher's web of lies unravelled

By Holly Christodoulou, Digital Court Editor

REBECCA Joynes attempted to paint herself as a “lonely” teacher who was just craving attention when she began messaging her victims.

Claiming she had just gone through a break-up, the mum appeared horrified as she denied having a “powerful” sexual attraction to boys.

But while working at the school, she shunned work events and never interacted with her colleagues on a non-professional level.

Instead, Joynes struck up close bonds with her pupils – chatting with the girls at break time and “strutting” down the corridors as they cheered her on.

It wasn’t just the girls who had taken a shine to Joynes but also her male pupils, who found her “really pretty”.

She just laughed when she was given the nickname “Bunda Becky” and revelled in comments about how “sexy” she was.

Her vile crimes may even have been wrongly seen as rumours spread by schoolboys looking for respect among their peers.

But even though she factory reset her phone to cover her tracks, police were able to find texts that blew apart Joynes’ web of lies.

Instead of a desperate teacher looking for company during the pandemic, she was revealed as a predator who lured the teens for sex.

Joynes tried to backtrack through her trial – even at one stage blaming one of the pupils for “controlling her”.

She also sobbed as she attempted to garner sympathy by discussing the child she had with her 16-year-old victim.

Clutching a bonnet belonging to the baby, Joynes shook when the guilty verdicts were delivered.

The delusional teacher may have convinced herself she had done nothing wrong but her crimes were apparent to anyone who followed the case.

Now she’s been locked up, perhaps the true victims in the case can finally move on.

The teen added: “I would try and end it and would say ‘you are a f***ing weirdo, you’re a nonce basically, go find someone your own age’.”

He added that he’d spent 18-months of his life “with a paedophile”.

The baby was taken from Joynes following an emergency court hearing 24 hours after delivery and is now in the care of the teen dad.

The teacher, who clutched a baby bonnet every day in court, is allowed contact three times a week for three hours.

During her evidence, Joynes tried to portray herself as someone who just felt “lonely” and wanted the attention.

She told how she had gone through a break up during the pandemic as she strongly denied having a “powerful” sexual attraction to 15-year-old boys.

Joynes also told jurors she ruined her “dream job” with stupid “mistakes” – but claimed her sexual relationship with Boy B only began after he had turned 16 and they had both left the school.

The teacher said: “I was in love with him. I was pregnant with his child.”

Pupil who had baby with paedo teacher reveals agony in victim impact statement

Boy B said: “I struggled to come to terms with my abuse, I was completely in denial. I subsequently held back and did not fully open up to people. For reference, Rebecca was in my head that much. I would argue until I was blue in the face protecting her and would not hear a bad word against her. I felt as so I had betrayed someone I love and had done wrong by giving evidence. I felt a large sense of guilt for a long time.

“I questioned if I was right to give statements about the woman who was carrying my child, since then I have replayed a lot of things in my head, and spoken to a lot of people, and it has made me realise the full extent of the abuse carried out on me and the tactics that were used to do so.

“I was coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused. It is very upsetting that this has happened to me. The months after the abuse happened to me, was a very dark time, I felt backed into a corner. I had just lived a double life for 18 months behind my family’s back.

“This had a massive mental toll over me and my family. It tore my family apart, they struggled to come to terms with the fact they sent me to school, where they believed it to be a safe environment, and this happened as a result. I attended school regularly and left with straight As.

“My parents broke down every day and night trying to get me to speak, I held many things back. I thought I would be better off dealing with things alone, as it is a rare case and not very relatable to others.

“One of the hardest things I had to deal with in this time was not being able to be involved in the pregnancy. Social services contacted me in October and told me that Rebecca had refused to let them update me about anything including, due date, gender, health updates. The thought of not being able to see my child was heartbreaking.

“I now also really struggle with the idea of going into another relationship, due to the negative experience I have gone through with Rebecca. Ultimately, I will forever be Rebecca‘s victim and forever linked to her through our child.”

But the court was told Joynes was simply a “gaslighter” who was trying to paint herself as the victim.

She was also accused of a “naked attempt to garner sympathy” by visibly tucking a baby’s bonnet belonging to the tot she had with Boy B into her trousers.

Jane Wilson, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Rebecca Joynes was in a position of trust as a high school teacher.

“She abused her position to groom and exploit two schoolboys in the worst way, with no thought for the lasting impact it would have on them.

“Every parent sends their children to school expecting them to be safeguarded and taken care of; Joynes’s actions have eroded that trust.

“I would like to thank the victims for supporting the prosecution. I hope they can start to move forward knowing Joynes has been held accountable for her actions.”
