Inside UK’s biggest Superdrug where shoppers can get manicures and ear piercings as it opens doors today

SUPERDRUG has unveiled its largest UK store as it eyes up opening 25 more locations this year.

The health and beauty retailer cut the ribbon on the new-look branch in Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford, this morning.

The London branch has been refitted and is now double in size – measuring 9,890 square feet.

The store expansion has also seen a further 25 members of permanent staff taken on.

Shoppers can pick up all the regular Superdrug health and beauty products, toiletries and fragrances at the new-look branch.

It also features a new fragrance counter and larger Beauty Studio where customers can book in eyebrow, lash, nail, hair and piercing appointments.

Superdrug said any customers who have its Health and Beautycard loyalty card can also earn points at the branch.

Nigel Duxbury, property director at Superdrug, said: “We are delighted to be opening an even bigger store at Westfield Stratford, making it the largest Superdrug store in the UK.

“We are confident that local customers will be excited by the new store offering and enjoy our ranges of popular health and beauty brands, luxury fragrance counter and professional Beauty Studio.”

Today’s new store unveiling comes after Superdrug announced plans to open 25 new branches before the end of the year.

The health and beauty retailer made the announcement in May, with the total new store estate expected to create 500 new jobs.

Superdrug also announced plans to extend seven existing stores and refurbish 60 more throughout 2024.

Branches will receive new shop fronts, fully recyclable signage, improved flooring and ceiling tiles made from bio-soluble mineral wool, clay and starch.

Stores will also be upgraded with energy-efficient LED lighting, new floor layouts and upgraded fascia and internal signage.

The new-look store in Westfield is not the only one to have Beauty Studios offering customers piercings, manicures and treatments.

Superdrug said 500 of its branches across the UK and Republic of Ireland have them.

OTHER RETAILERS EXPANDING ON THE HIGH STREET

Retailers like Wilko, Paperchase and Ted Baker crashing into administration since the start of last year might have you thinking it’s all doom and gloom across the high street.

Figures from the Centre for Retail Research also reveal 10,494 shops closed permanently in 2023, with almost 120,000 jobs lost.

But there are a number of retailers who are bucking the closure trend and opening stores across the UK.

Discount giant B&M has already opened 27 branches this year, with stores welcoming in customers across England and Wales.

German discounter Aldi has also set its sights on opening hundreds more stores in the coming years.

In May, posh retailer M&S announced plans to open two more branches in the UK.

It also confirmed plans to refresh 12 more across London as part of a £30million investment.

DIY chain Screwfix is also set to open dozens of branches as its owner Kingfisher looks to expand its presence on the high street.

And Lidl is eyeing up potential sites where it is keen to open shops.

Iconic 90s retailer Toys R Us is also pulling up the shutters on more branches across the UK.

Earlier this month it confirmed plans to open 30 new shops this summer after opening almost a dozen in 2023.
