THEY may look sweet and totally innocent – but one mum was left red-faced after discovering what those trendy wicker hearts really stand for.
This cult favourite home accessory has become all the range and we often seen them hung in kitchens, somewhere in the living room – or outside one’s property.
Wicker hearts skyrocketed in popularity in the late 2010s and became a must-have for any home interior influencer.
In the recent years, there’s been a resurgence for the nature-inspired decor, which shoppers can find at Dunelm or at rival B&Q.
But have you ever wondered if there’s a meaning behind them?
Well, one woman, whose neighbours seem to be obsessed with wicker hearts, recently did – and she’s mortified.
Taking to Mumsnet, the woman explained that she decided to take a little stroll around her neighbourhood to sort out some errands, and spotted the decorations on quite a few houses.
Totally baffled, the anonymous woman wondered whether these, perhaps, were a new craze, comparing them to ”sticks-in-vases’ and ‘pebbly s**t”.
“Over the course of my three-mile walk, I swear I must have seen tens and tens of houses with hearts hanging up in windows, on doors and on gates,” she said in the post.
“All made out of painted punched metal or wicker. They all seemed to be huge, maybe 30cm in diameter.
”Some of them were quite nice I suppose, but I couldn’t help but wonder when I missed that particular memo.”
The woman then asked fellow parents on the forum whether anyone else had noticed this or whether it was just something people living in this ”very middle-class suburb of a fairly dull town” did.
The post was inundated with responses, as people raced to the comments section to share their thoughts – and here, many suggested the decor is frequently used to signal when somebody is a swinger.
“It’s what swingers use instead of pampas grass nowadays,” one user claimed.
“You obviously live in a very friendly area. Of course, it’s possible that not everything I typed is true.”
However, the joke has since made its way onto X (formerly known as Twitter) with many claiming the wicker hearts is indeed a symbol for couples that like to get steamy with other couples.
The best renovation to add value totally depends on your property, the local market and your potential buyers.
Zoopla shared a list of upgrades that will instantly add value to your home.
“Is it true that a wicker heart on a door or in a window means that swingers live there? Someone told me they’re the new pampas grass,” one person wondered.
Another replied to a question asking what pampas grass means, stating: “Swingers!
”Everyone knows that, although apparently nowadays it is a woven/wicker heart on the door.”
