DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE giving up my job to care for my dad full-time, I’ve found his “tough love” approach overwhelming.
He is 79 and I’m his 49-year-old daughter.
Dad’s Jack Russell was his life but recently he has been losing his temper and whacking him with his stick so hard the dog whimpers.
My father has fallen over a few times when taking a swipe so I was hoping he’d stop hitting his dog – but nothing has changed.
Every problem gets a personal reply from one of our trained counsellors.
Fill out and submit our easy-to-use and confidential form and the Dear Deidre team will get back to you.

MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE
DEIDRE SAYS: Has your father behaved this way previously?
If not, his violent outbursts could be a sign of dementia.
No doubt your dad is frustrated he’s not able to do as much and is taking it out on the dog, but that is no excuse for cruelty.
Please talk to him urgently and tell him his behaviour is upsetting. Explain that if he can’t stop immediately, you’ll need to rehome the dog.
The RSPCA (rspca.org.uk) can provide more helpful information. Also make an appointment with your dad’s GP to discuss your concerns.
