Last night, temperatures plunged to an icy -10C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland, according to the Met Office.
Today, much of the UK will continue to feel the chill as an Arctic cold plunge pushes southwards.
A yellow snow and ice warning is in force for Scotland, north Wales and north-west England until midnight tonight.
Northern Ireland is also under alert until 11am, with similar warnings covering the same areas continuing into Thursday.
Forecasters predict Northern Scotland could see a whopping 20cm of snowfall.
Northern and eastern parts of Scotland saw the “bulk of the snow” on Monday, with 15cm on the ground at Aberdeen Airport by the evening.
These conditions saw around 200 schools across Aberdeenshire, Moray and Shetland closed at the start of the week.
Today more than 50 are still shut, with others elsewhere in Scotland opening later than normal.
Schools in Merseyside have now sent out warnings to parents not to bring their children in this morning.
Gateacre School and Archbishop Blanch were the first to make the decision due to “hazardous weather conditions.”
The disruption comes as a “cold plunge of Arctic air” moved south across the whole country over the past few days, making it 5C to 6C lower than usual for this time of year, the Met Office said.
Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said there could be a “persistent band of snow” today across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales.
He said: “In the early hours of the morning we’re looking at temperatures getting down to -12C in a few spots, Tuesday night possibly down to -15C.
“So certainly a very cold spell into Wednesday.”
In the latest update from the Met Office on X, formerly Twitter, the forecaster said: “Outbreaks of sleet and snow becoming more persistent this morning in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.
“Brighter spells in Wales and southern and central England with crisp winter sunshine.”
Rain, sleet and snow will soak the north, with ice crusting on the roads.
