THE correct pronunciation of certain words can cause something of a stir online.
At least that’s what Carla Gouveia found, when she uploaded a video on TikTok recently in which she referred to a necklace – which she pronounced “neck lace”.
“Neck LACE,” someone commented on the video, alongside a crying laughing emoji.
Responding, Carla hit back: “Right, I’m not being funny now, I’ve had too many comments from people saying that I’m saying necklace wrong.
“And it’s not said wrong, because what do you do with your shoelaces?
“What do you eat? Strawberry laces.”

Carla continued to explain that the way other people pronounced the word means something entirely different to her.
“If it was neck-less – how you’re all saying you should say necklace – neck-less to me is this,” she said, before bringing her shoulders up to her head to imitate someone with no neck.
“Neck less. Do you know what I mean?” she continued.
“You’ve not got a neck. Fingerless, brainless, heartless.
“It’s necklace!
“Why have they spelled it lace?
“Shoelace. You don’t say shoeless.
“You don’t say strawberry lesses.”
And concluding her video, Carla said: “So I’m right, Just accept it for once that my wording, my pronunciation, makes more sense than everyone else’s that said I said it wrong.
“Okay? Goodbye.”
In the comments section, the majority of people admitted that Carla’s video had made them question things.
“She has got a point,” one wrote.

“Your explanation is making me question everything,” another added.
While a third commented: “You’re so wrong but I absolutely agree with you.”
