HBO’s new HOUSE of the Dragon may be getting buzz right now, but many people are diehard fans of the Game of Throne series.
Now one person has told how they refused to attend a friend’s GOT themed wedding – because even the vows will be in one of George RR Martin’s created languages.
A Reddit user asked for advice on whether he was a bad person for not wanting to attend a friend’s Game of Thrones themed destination wedding, where even the vows would be in the show’s made up language[/caption]A Reddit post received a lot of attention after the person posting let loose on a rant about attending a friend’s upcoming wedding.
FluffyStrain6713 said “Lexa” was getting married soon and she and her to-be husband were extreme GOT fans – having watched the show more than five times.
She also said their home is decked out with show-themed decorations and accessories.
“Because of their shared love of Game of Thrones, Lexa and her fiancé decided to have a game of thrones-themed wedding,” the poster wrote.
While the invitee said they could understand and even tolerate the themed wedding, there was one big problem.
“The only thing I can’t seem to get behind is the fact that the majority of the wedding will be conducted in High Valyrian (for those who don’t know, it’s a made up language from game of thrones).”
The post went on to relay that the nuptials involved a destination wedding, and said it was hard to justify going all the way to attend a wedding “that’s not even in a real language.”
Then the guest on the edge asked a simple question: “Am I the A**x!??% if I don’t go?”
To add insult to injury, the friend said the couple had already been sending links to learn High Valyrian and that the speeches and toasts at the reception were also expected to be in the fake lingo.
More than 8,000 Reddit users viewed the post and more than 1,500 weighed in – and it was clear many were diehard GOT fans, or at least familiar with the show.
One said: “I wouldn’t feel safe attending a GOT themed wedding. Who knows if it’ll be a red or purple one.”
Another commented: “lol. If someone doesn’t start playing the Rains of Castarmere, what’s the point of it?”
Another joked: “unfortunately you might find the doors have been shut and locked. Best choice is to hide.”
For those who haven’t watched the blockbuster show, in the famous Red Wedding scene, members of House Stark are massacred after being locked in by the villainous House Frey.
One other poster was reflective, saying in part: “fantasy themed weddings are cool when done right, and maybe they need a translator for the crowd instead of expecting them all to learn a new language.”
And ended the comment with what seemed like a sage piece of advice.
“If it’s going to be insufferable for you…don’t go.”

The original poster did say that they felt like even if they did show up, “Lexa” would be mad if they didn’t learn the language.
If the guest didn’t go one way to while away the time may be to watch the HBO prequel House of the Dragon.
