ANNA Delvey fooled New York’s elite into believing she was a millionaire German heiress, as featured in the Netflix hit, Inventing Anna.
Delvey was convicted of fraud as her debts eventually caught up with her, but not before she swindled $225,000 from banks, friends, hotels, and more.
Anna Delvey, 31, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, was born on January 23, 1991, during the Soviet Union in Russia and moved to Germany with her family when she was 16 years old.
She moved to New York City in 2013 and adopted the persona of a German heiress, ultimately conning Manhattan socialites, banks, and hotels out of thousands of dollars.
Sorokin was charged with grand larceny in 2018 and was found guilty on six counts in 2019.
She was sentenced to a maximum of 12 years in prison but was released in February 2021.
She dropped out of London’s Central Saint Martin’s art and design college in 2012 when she decided to move to Paris for an internship at Purple Magazine.
It was during this time that she adopted the surname Delvey and continued to use this name to con people who thought they were her friends out of thousands of dollars.
In the summer of 2013, Sorokin spent time in New York City befriending art collector Michael Xufu Huang.
It was then that Sorokin asked to accompany Huang to an exhibition in Italy.
She reportedly promised that she would pay back the cost of flights and a hotel stay at a later date.
Huang told Cosmopolitan that the money materialized later on when he was “wired money from an unfamiliar account”.
The outlet reported that the art collector grew more suspicious of Sorokin when a restaurant called him following her birthday dinner.
It was alleged that the restaurant was asking for Sorokin’s details, as the card numbers she’d given had bounced.
Sorokin was released from prison on February 11, 2021, after serving three years of her sentence.
But In March 2021, six weeks after her release, she was taken back into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa.
Following almost a year of her time detained by ICE, the New York Post reported Anna is set to be deported the night of March 14, 2022.
Despite the fraudulent socialite’s appeal to be heard by the court on April 19, 2022, she will reportedly be sent out of the country to Frankfurt, Germany before that date.
Netflix offered Sorokin $320,000 for the rights to tell her story in the new crime series Inventing Anna, which she accepted.
Due to New York state laws, convicted felons are not permitted to profit off their crimes, therefore the funds received from Netflix went toward paying off her restitution.
In an op-ed for Insider, Sorokin said she has no intention of watching Inventing Anna.
She said: “It doesn’t look like I’ll be watching Inventing Anna anytime soon.
“Even if I were to pull some strings and make it happen, nothing about seeing a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal-insane-asylum setting sounds appealing to me.”
Sorokin told The New York Times in 2019 that she had no regrets about the past.
She admitted: “The thing is, I’m not sorry. I’d be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything. I regret the way I went about certain things.”
Netflix released the trailer to the new miniseries Inventing Anna on January 14, 2022.
The streaming giant said: “This whole story is completely true. Except for all of the parts that are totally made up.”
Julia Garner will star as Anna Delvey alongside actress Laverne Cox.
The show premiered on Netflix on February 11, 2022.
