NICOLA Coughlan has posted a cheeky first picture of Derry Girls’ final season – declaring ‘the wee lesbian has returned’.
The 34-year-old actress plays high school student Clare Devlin in the hit Channel 4 comedy, which has been off our screens since April 2019.
Nicola Coughlan has shared a first look at Derry Girls series three[/caption]Series three – which will be the show’s last – was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, but Nicola has now taken to social media to reveal filming is finally underway.
Sharing a selfie of one half of her face, with her blonde hair in low pigtails, she captioned the shot on Twitter: “Guess who’s back in the house? #ReturnOfTheWeeLesbian.’”
Fans were thrilled, with one writing underneath: “Bloody love this show and I’m so glad your all back, the Irish sense of humour is the best.”
Another added: “So frickin excited for the new season to come out.”
A third tweeted: “hello little one! we missed you!”
The post comes after The Sun exclusively revealed that Derry Girls would come to an end after the third series.
Given the show’s main stars are in their late-20s and early 30s, it has become increasingly difficult for them to get away with playing teenagers.
A TV source said: “Derry Girls has had a great run and will go down as one of Channel 4’s best ever comedies.
“But the show’s come to its natural end and everybody associated believes it’s the right time to go, when there’s such a demand for it.”
The groundbreaking comedy follows a set of girl pals, plus “a wee lad from England”, growing up in 1990s Northern Ireland during the troubles. The first series aired in 2018 and quickly gained a cult following, making a second and third series inevitable.
The show’s success put many of its cast on the map, particularly Nicola , who went on to land a role in Netflix blockbuster drama Bridgerton.
Derry Girls series one and two is available on All 4.
