WHEN YOU send your children to school, you hope they are in the best care possible.
Unfortunately for one mum, this was not the case.
The mum said she had a plan in place with the school but the teacher didn’t listen[/caption]The mum posted in a Reddit forum, how she found out a teacher was ignoring her daughter’s type one diabetes, which could have put in serious harm.
The mum, aged 47, remained anonymous and said that her 13-year-old daughter had type one diabetes and sometimes suffered with hypoglycemia.
hypoglycemia is a condition where your blood sugar levels dip below normal and the best way to treat it is by having a sugary snack or drink followed by carbohydrates.
She goes on to say she set up a 504 plan with the school, which is a formal plan schools develop to help kids with conditions get the support they need whilst in school time.
She said: “One of her teachers, who is apparently a new teacher, denied her a snack while hypoglycemic.
“She nearly passes out but in the next class she is in, the teacher has enough common sense to let her eat a snack before passing out at school.”
When her daughter told her mum what happened, she immediatley called the school, and when the teacher was free, she called the mum back.
The mum said: “I lectured her and told her that she needed to let my daughter eat a snack when needed.
“She says snacks aren’t allowed in class but I tell her that due to my daughter’s 504 she is legally required to give my daughter an exception to that rule, and recommended she give it another read.
“Before hanging up, I tell her that if she does this again I will contact the principal and let him know.
“I recorded this call on my husband’s phone by the way.”
A month later, the same situation happened with her daughter and the teacher.
The mum was furious and scheduled a meeting with the school’s principal, and played back the recording of her phone call with the teacher.
She writes: “I told him she has done this twice and needs to have a talk with her.”
Later on, the mum bumps into the teacher in public, and in awkward exchange, the teacher told the mum she was fired because of her complaint.
She wrote that the principal had fired the teacher for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) violations.
During the exchange the teacher told her she got her fired over ‘some stupid snacks’, completely dismissing the daughter’s need to eat due to her diabetes.
She claims the teacher called her daughter an ‘entitled brat’, the mum, who said she didn’t want to argue simply walked away from her.
She asked users of Reddit whether she was unfair and had taken it too far for getting the teacher fired.
The majority of users sides with the mum and agreed the teacher should have followed the 504 plan set out.
One of the top comments read: “A 504 is a legally binding agreement that the school HAS to follow. The teacher was actually probably fired because she didn’t follow the 504, and the school could get into trouble for that.”
“This teacher got themselves fired for literally endangering your daughters life. We had a girl pass out in class my senior year. She didn’t know she was diabetic & was dieting for prom along with being an athlete. She hit her head on a desk. She was okay, but it was scary.” Added another user.
A third user commented: “Yeah, it’s one thing to say “no snacks in class,” it’s another thing entirely to say “I don’t give a shit if you pass out and have a health crisis because of your illness that I am legally required to accommodate.” The teacher got herself fired. OP merely pointed out her atrocious behaviour.”
After bumping into the teacher in public, she called her daughter an entitled brat and said she was the reason she was fired[/caption]Plus, a mum was left fuming after a teacher mocked her nine-year-old for waving goodbye to her.
